That's a pretty random number. I'm not sure what mid-law firms in Florida pay, but it sounds possible.

Possible? Maybe, if you have connections. Probable with connections? Nope.

And I'm not a completely uninformed 0L hazarding a guess. I know many people currently attending and who graduated from Miami's LS at various areas on the curve and let's just say, getting a job is more of a concern than starting salary.

I'm sure that it is very possible, especially in Miami. Depends on the kind of law and your grades, as with every law school.

Does anyone know anything about how schools like Duke and UVa place in FL? Who gets biglaw/midlaw jobs in Miami/Tampa?

Miami has a far bigger rep in-state than TLSers would ever imagine beacuse of its rank. It is the best undergrad in most science categories and beats out UF and FSU. Some of this power and alumni base caries over to influence the lawschool.

Miami is indeed a big name in the state - and of course, most especially in South Florida. However, I know many people near the top of their class and its just really brutal right now trying to find jobs.

Not saying that this is true for everyone or would be true. Nor can I forecast the economy in three years when the c/o 2013 will be entering the job market. I'd say that the people I know who graduated UMiami and are employed make in the ballpark of $60k. I'd rather plan for that and be pleasantly surprised if I made $90k then to bank on making more and being disappointed (and possibly screwed if I had major loans).

TCR

I grew up in SoFla and no school in state touches UM there. It has a fantastic reputation in the area, and provides the best shot at Big Law from a FL school. However, at sticker there is now way I would pass up UF or FSU.

Extremely unlikely.

Only a few firms in Fla. pay that kind of scale -- Greenberg, Holland and Knight, Gunster.

Top 10 percent is too generous of an estimate.

ITE I think anyone who isn't going to HYSCCN should have this mentality. I know I do, at least to a certain extent.

pre-ITE, only the top 15% of miami grads would make 100k/yr or more. only 25% of their grads would make more than 75k/yr. 20-25% of their grads come out making ~40k/yr in govt and public interest jobs... considering the caliber of students at the miami and the size of their classes (nearly 400), their employement prospects don't seem so bad.

Fixed. Do not go to Miami...it's a mediocre school with horrible job prospects, and worse--they accept anyone willing to pay their outrageous tuition fees. Their class last year was absurdly large, and they had to defer tons of students. It's an embarrassment.

I disagree with the part about Miami being a mediocre school. It's a great school that offers a top notch education. The only reason they admitted an absurdly large class was that they wanted dibs on the best talent it could get but could not tell how things were going to shake out in terms of admission to other schools. Adcoms know that many people are applying to 20+ schools these days (heck, 40+), so it's much harder for them to predict who goes where, and with people mostly choosing schools based on rankings, and Miami not being at near the top (except for in Lawdragon), they expected many students to decline their offers.

When people talk about "great schools" on here they typically talk about it being a school with great respect and giving its graduates great opportunities upon graduation. Most people on TLS know that the education you get at just about any school is nearly the same, and that's not what sets law schools apart at all.

When you consider Miami's class makeup and post-employment opportunities, "mediocre" is honestly the right word. It does have decent opportunities for grads, if they finish in the top half (or maybe not even that many, in this economy) and it's better than many other schools, but it's not a school anyone should be eager to pay sticker for without a very honest discussion about their odds of finding work when they graduate.

Any top-50 college or university in the U.S. is a world class school. UM is a consensus top-50 and one of the best universities any student can go to, as are Yeshiva, Rensselaer Tech, UC-Irvine, Illinois and others ranked in that range. You'd have to go to #125 or beyond before you find a weak college or university in the U.S.

Consensus top 50? Miami IS #50 in the college rankings, and #71 among law schools. Sounds mediocre to me.
