tOSU vs. Case vs. Cincinnati vs. PSU
I'm considering attending one of the four schools in the subject line. My interest lies in criminal law, most likely in public service (e.g. prosecutor, legal aid). I plan to remain in the Mid-West for up to three years after law school to gain experience and credibility; after that time, I plan to relocate to the Inter-Mountain West. Outside of University of Utah or University of Arizona, it's less costly for me to stay in either Ohio or Pennsylvania. Your advice, please?

OSU. Best reputation by far. Places extremely well in Ohio. Can't think of reason I'd choose the others unless there was a big $ difference.

Places well in Ohio except Cincinnati. Depends on where OP wants to be.holydonkey wrote:OSU. Best reputation by far. Places extremely well in Ohio. Can't think of reason I'd choose the others unless there was a big $ difference.

+1 to OSU.
From the sound of it, it seems like you have residency for Ohio and Pennsylvania. If that's the case, I think your list looks something like this:
1.OSU
2. Cincinnati
3. CWRU
4. Penn State
I've heard people say that Penn State's law school is private and is only affiliated with the University. If you're not an Ohio residency, you can get Ohio residency after one year. If you end up going somewhere in Pennsylvania, I would go to Pitt before Penn State.

Ohio State: Best job prospects in Ohio.
Case Western: Best regional portability - seems to have a good reputation in PA/Some reach to NY (not quite as much NYC)/Good in Midwest generally. Cleveland's not the most awesome city to live in, though, imho.
Cincinnati: Very small enrollment, which I think is a big plus for law school. Does great in Cincy, which is a good-sized market, but pretty regional.
Penn State: Carlisle campus is rural but looks beautiful. Is rising in the rankings fast. However, it's not a powerhouse anywhere - Penn/Temple/Villanova in Philadelphia, Pitt/Duquesne (Yes, T4 but great for P-burgh) in Pittsburgh, and Case is better for Erie. In effect, Penn State's in no-man's land regionally and job prospects still aren't that great yet. Could be gunning for lower T1 within 5 years though.

Tell that to your football team. It'll make them feel better. For a moment. Then they'll realize it's all a lie.hopefulundergrad wrote:UM >>>> OSUTipTravHoot wrote:Michigan, really?

Re: tOSU vs. Case vs. Cincinnati vs. PSU
I'd also have to say tOSU. It's a great program, and I have a few friends who are there already. Pretty good prospects throughout Ohio, and it has a strong alumni base.
Cincy, while even more regional, is growing pretty quickly. Being pretty much on the border with KY and IN help it a little in the immediate markets there as well. As was already mentioned, Cincy has the added bonus of having a very small entering class (between 120-125).
It really will depend on where, exactly, you'd like to work right out of law school--as all four are still rather regional. If you're an Ohio resident, however, tOSU or Cincy would be your best bets--they're both pretty cheap for in-state tuition (relatively speaking, of course).

When you were listing the abbreviations you really had to put the "t" in front of "OSU?"

I go to Cincy and it's average. You have to do well (~top third) to get a decent paying (~$75,000-120,000) firm job and the CPD here sucks. But, they are very generous to out-of-state applicants and offer in-state-tuition (+ $600) if you live in KY for your first year. Also, you can land a scholly for half-tuition by hitting their 75%'s (at least in the past three years or so).
Visit the schools if possible as it is a very important decision which should not be decided by random comments on a discussion board.
Good Luck
P.S. don't go to law school unless you really want to. Job market sucks, type-A personalities everywhere, crazy work-loads, and no guarantee of success.

I'll tell you now that jobs in Cleveland are pretty open to people at Case.
Ohio State is fun if you're willing to put up with the gayest bullcrap you've ever seen in your life for 3 years. I went there for undergrad, and don't give a shit about football. Well, I thought I did freshman year, but I realized that I hate sports about one year in.
It's not a collegiate atmosphere. That said, Case is in the absolute ghetto of Cleveland. You're probably better off going to OSU, but if you get decent money and have ties to Cleveland, consider Case.

I wouldn't say University Circle is a ghetto. It's near some rough neighborhoods to the west around the hospital, but University Circle itself is nice, plus Little Italy is right next door.Z3RO wrote:I'll tell you now that jobs in Cleveland are pretty open to people at Case.

certainly not in what I would call an "absolute ghetto". I would also never pay Case tuition for anywhere outside T10TipTravHoot wrote:I wouldn't say University Circle is a ghetto. Cincy is surrounded by ghetto. There is no disputing that. I've never been to Case so can't really say about there
