US News totally jumped the shark this year. I don't know how anyone can see such drastic shifts and think the rankings still have value. I mean, no offense to the University of Washington, but a jump from 30 to 20 in one year? I just don't buy it. That's just one example of the nonsense found throughout this list.

These kinds of random jumps and drops happen every year. There are always a few schools that jump 10-20 spots. If there's "nonsense" here, it's the same kind of nonsense that we see every year from USNWR.

Hmmm... I realize there's almost always a tie at 7 or 8, followed by a drop to 10 or 11, but Michigan's managed to never drop to 10 before (please correct me if I'm wrong). Even though the ranking really don't mean shit (still happily going), I bet the admissions office has to be a bit concerned.

UT is the same school it was a year ago. On par with Vandy and UCLA. While it has been competitive with T14's in terms of clerkships, it has never matched up in terms of NLJ250 placement. It's raw score of 77 last year is the same this year and not too much has changed in its stats (slightly lower GPA median and placement, same LSAT median (though they managed a point higher on 75th%).

I really like UT, but I really never got the excitement from last year. The school didn't magically become on par with a different group of schools overnight. If it got out of state people to attend at sticker over better options for their career goals, than that was stupid. If it convinced instate people to turn down something like DCNG at sticker (with the intent to come back to Texas), then it probably saved some people from themselves.

Does anyone know how Harvard is ranked below Stanford???

In terms of actual employment placement (A3 clerkships, NLJ250 numbers etc) and other factors it's not absurd to have Stanford ahead of Harvard (they are peer schools), but I don't understand how it happened given the actual criteria USNWR uses.

- I can't imagine Stanford got higher scores in the Peer Assessment and Lawyer/Judge Assessment than Harvard. Harvard is Harvard and as such usually ties with Yale for the highest scores in these, right? As far as I know, Harvard actually always ends up ahead in Peer Assessment and equal in Lawyer/Judge Assessment.
- Harvard has a higher median LSAT and median GPA than Stanford.
- It doesn't count for much, but Harvard has the most library volumes by far.

Together, these things amount to more than half the weighting of the rankings.

- Meanwhile, Stanford has a lower acceptance rate, but they are close enough and it is weighted little enough that that shouldn't actually matter (and besides, it was true last year too)
- I think Stanford gets higher Bar Passage scores just because the CA bar is so hard. Again, though, it's worth very very little and the difference isn't high.
- As far as I can tell, they usually have about the same spending per student (despite Harvard's larger size), although that might have changed this year.

Did Stanford just end up ahead this year because of employment numbers at graduation/9-months? It seems like that's just statistical noise and probably shouldn't overcome higher reputation/LSAT/GPA. Ah well.

But Michigone isn't ranked between 12-14
