I'd guess Berk's just doing that Berk thing that they do so well. Doubt they GAF that people are waiting for this info.lecsa wrote:Maybe it's bad and that's why they are holding outMissouriMisery wrote:Anybody called berkeley and asked about employment? I'm sure they did just fine.

Emory is up. 61 + 16 /292= 26.4%. Down from 29% last year. School employed graduates is 21.2%, up from 13.9% last year. Ouch. Finally hits T20 but employs a fifth of its graduates.

That's the only reason they are top 20.. All those grads they hired are counted from US news which gave them a huge boost.

Minnesota actually has the exact same biglaw % as 2012, and the exact same number of federal clerks (10) as 2012.

Agreed. For the record I just found it interesting, wasn't trying to defend the school.

We'll see if cutting the number of 1L's in Minnesota schools from 1000 down to 800 does the trick. I mean seriously MSP is a darkhorse for most saturated market in America.cannibal ox wrote:Agreed. For the record I just found it interesting, wasn't trying to defend the school.

A school ranked as high as Minnesota has that percentage? It's a good exemplification of why the rankings suck.

Sure. But I was thinking more in the way that people use these things to make decisions about where to go to law school without looking at job stats. Minnesota being that high is deceptive.lecsa wrote:Maybe the lower ranked schools have even worse job prospectsOtunga wrote:A school ranked as high as Minnesota has that percentage? Although there are a good number of schools that have a far better biglaw/fed clerkship percentage down the rankings.

Re: Class of 2013 Employment Data
As someone mentioned, 17.5% is pretty standard biglaw/clerk for Minnesota.
I would give Minnesota some shit for its 41 people in firms of 2-10. That's very upsetting to see - it means a lot of kids are hanging their own shingles together, or going into family practices: I actually know a 2014 starting up a firm in the 2-10 range.
Other then that, I actually would deign to give two small defenses of Minnesota's ABA numbers:
1) 70% FT/JD-required is actually a slight improvement from last year, and not all that bad when compared to almost all law schools. "T20" is dumb, but Minnesota deserves a place among its "strong regional" peers. I know this argument gets diced up all the time, but if it was located in a more substantial legal market, it would have 100+ firm placement in a higher bracket... nearly all the grads wind up in MN after graduation, and there are very few firms hiring of that size. Minnesota is fucking over less of its class than GW, Fordham, ect., and for in-state students who comprise a large percentage of its incoming class, it's significantly cheaper both tuition and CoL.
2) 41 full time state/local clerks could mean more than meets the eye. For a lot of homegrown midwestern students who plan to make careers in the twin cities legal market, a state clerkship isn't a bad starting place (it's not like there are a ton of openings in the district courts). I can't prove this, but I would be willing to bet that a sizeable contingent of those 41 clerks - maybe 15 - have 100+ firm work lined up afterwards. Just anecdotally, I know one associate at Dorsey and one at Robins Kaplan through family friends who were encouraged to clerk at the state supreme court for a year after graduating, C/O 2012 and 2013.

Aren't there barely any firms in Minnesota that are more than 100 lawyers to begin with?

I feel like people say that about every market. They're all over-saturated.Tiago Splitter wrote:We'll see if cutting the number of 1L's in Minnesota schools from 1000 down to 800 does the trick. 2-10 is most likely "shitlaw" (small practices) with low pay, if I'm looking at it correctly? Low pay makes it hard to repay back BIGLOANS. I wonder how many of those people stick with it after a few years.
