Cool beans. IMO, this is how rankings should be done.

Sorry if this has been asked, but is there a list somewhere showing the schools in order by employment score?

So what is the biggest shocker?

Michigan continues to lag behind its peers...

good idea, added a link (and gave it 200 votes since it's probably the most important thing for pre-law students to see) - assume Reg doesn't mind (if you do, just let me know and I can take it down :) )

Wow, is Penn really as good as these numbers suggest? 94% employment and only about 2.5% school-employed.

And what's with Harvard and Yale's numbers? Aren't clerkships factored into the employment score?

Well, if you look at Yale's breakdown, there is literally no one unemployed in the class and still seeking a job. The biggest reason for Yale's lower score is that a good percentage of the class took "JD preferred." What that means, I'm not sure. Given Yale's reputation, I wouldn't be shocked if a significant percentage of these were jobs like highly prestigious and competitive U.N. positions, competitive political positions, etc.

They are considered full-time jobs, but I assume these are just 6 week job opportunities the school creates for their unemployed? What are these kids doing for those 6 weeks/ are any of these kids actually given truly full-time careers from the school?

The weird thing is I think I've only heard from 1 person on TLS who claimed to ever have had one of those jobs. It was a Duke grad or something who said they were all scams. But she also said some really strange things, so people thought she was a flame. Other than that it's a lot of people saying they knew people.

At most places it's where a graduate finds a PI org/govt agency which is willing to let her work for free, while the school pays the graduate a stipend.
Here's a helpful discussion from a TLS'er who is in a school funded job: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... d#p6536188

Here UVA reports that of 40 SFJ's for 2010, 32 are now in JD-required jobs, 3 in JD-preferred and 5 not responding: http://www.law.virginia.edu/html/news/2 ... NT0000AE76

Here's my attempt to figure out what the Harvard and Yale 2010 SFJs went on to do: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 1&t=206326

My general takeaway is that school funded jobs, scam or not, are actually a really great thing that (at least T14) schools do, and it would be bad for everyone if USNWR stopped incentivizing them. I still wouldn't want to be stuck in one, but they actually seem like reasonable fallbacks.

Note the major caveat that this only applies if the funding is to work at a PI organization as a lawyer. Supposedly places like GWU will just stick you in admissions for 9 months, which is basically worthless.

Wow when you compare these two charts its looks like the t14 (even Michigan) made huge improvements year over year. RIP c/o 2011. They truly had it the worst.

too be fair, those have different scales - the '11 report is placement in firms 50+, whereas the '12 chart is 100+ firms.

When you look at it like this, you can easily see that Chicago, Cornell, UVA, and to some extent NYU made huge jumps in their employment rates into desirable outcomes in just one year.
Awesome. Tyft.

Do you guys think this is a slight upward trend or just a minor fluctuation? Enough data to reasonably argue that c/o 2016 will have more job stability?

It is a slight upward trend and I don't expect it to get much better in the near future in terms of raw numbers. Over the past 5 years the total number of legal jobs has been relatively consistent, usually a bit below 30k. A significant problem has simply been too many graduates. It is very likely that there will still be too many graduates for the class of 2016. However, the percentages will be better because an estimated 14000 seats will have been eliminated since the class of 2012 enrolled in 2009.

But this shouldn't be enough to allay your fears. The other significant problem is that law school just costs too much money, and costs continue to rise despite wage depression for those who do get jobs.
