Doesn't matter much, there is quite a bit of east coast bias, and below 15-17 the more important thing is regional ranking.

The ranking of PNW schools is pretty much the same with 1. UW 2. L&C 3. UO 4. SU 5. Gonzaga and 6. Willamette. And not any real difference between 2-4 or 5-6.

In the west in general I guess UW fell from 5 to 6 behind UC Davis, but they are only separated by one point in the numerical scores, so I think it is pretty meaningless.

The reason most schools take the highest LSAT now is because the ABA is okay with schools reporting the highest LSAT score for matriculants. Therefore, the 150, 157, 180 person would effectively work as a 180 for whatever school the person wished to attend.
Yes, I understand that, but as far as the USNWR rankings are concerned, does it make it sense for a school to admit the latter (180) as opposed to the former (150, 157, 180)?
Well a school with be in serious review of why there is 30 point increase, and an even more marked 23 point increase to a perfect score. But functionally, and for the USNWR, it doesn't matter. But this doesn't matter, as though schools try to work their admissions towards rankings, they have many qualified applicants that can help them achieve that goal, which could mean that 150, 157, 180 could be WL/rejected.

USNWR realized that it's in Buffalo...
But what's its rank now? I don't think Syracuse is better than Buffalo for that region.
I assume its a tier 3. I find it highly unlikely that it dropped to tier 4 status.

ok, because I thought the reason some schools still average scores is because USNWR averages when it ranks schools.

USNWR doesn't average because it receives its data from the ABA, which does not mandate for schools to average anymore.

I see, but how do you know that the ABA doesn't report all scores to USNWR? I realize that the ABA asks schools to take the highest score, but this does not mean that don't release all scores to USNWR, right?

It's a visual representation of the USNWR scores. There is a gap because there is a score gap.

I think the radical changes in the T2 only highlight the extent to which the ranking formula can be gamed and the ludicracy of assuming that year-to-year ranking changes have much practical impact.

Dunno if there are doubters left, but I just confirmed that the magazine is indeed at that particular newsstand. Theyre charging $13 a copy so I wasn't in the mood to shell out for info I already had.

UBalt did jump up to T3
What's the basis for this?

Umm...the leaked rankings that have been discussed non-stop for the past 22 pages?

Unless you're referring to what caused the jump up to T3, in which case I have no clue.

Probably has something to do with an at-graduation employment rate of 93.4% (notwithstanding a bar passage rate of 84.6).

I think this tidbit from an ATL commenter says it all:

I agree that the rankings need input from other sources as well to give a more rounded opinion. Its sort of like when you fart in the car when you're by yourself. You if it smells really bad or just a little unpleasant. But to really now how awful that day-after-a-bing fart truly is, you have to have a couple of friends in the car with you and you have to be able to lock the windows so that you can hotbox the folks along for the ride. Only then will you know the true rank of the fart.

EDIT: ATL commenters are pretty funny.

"Take, for example, U.S. News’ measuring of the number of volumes in a school’s law library, which is especially irrelevant in today’s digital age."

I agree with Dean van Zandt regarding the need for additional rankings that value other metrics. But it seems the Dean van Zandt has not done all of the requisite homework on this issue. Take his comment about library statistics for example. As it turns out, The thomas cooley School of Law publishes rankings that also place some considerable weight on the library. While Dean van Zandt cavalierly dismisses such metrics as "especially irrelevant," it turns out that not only are there ranking alternatives to U.S. News, but they, too, use library metrics.

Of course, this does not mean that measures of the library are unassailable. But it is a bit disappointing to see Dean van Zandt lament a dearth of alternative rankings and simultaneously criticize library metrics. Apparently he did not realize that not only are there alternative rankings, but those alternatives also employ library based metrics in no small measure. I believe this unaddressed oversight undercuts the strength of Dean van Zandt's position with respect to both the absence of alternative rankings and the use of library metrics in ranking law schools.
