Because there have never been a lot of Duke students on this board until this year, and even now none of us really troll for Duke the way that UVA, Berkeley, and Michigan students troll for their schools. (Same goes for Penn, who also gets a bum rap.) Duke's placement stats have always spoken for themselves, and in recent years they've placed very well with respect to clerkships, too.dbt wrote:I am impressed by Duke's showing. I, of course, am Texas Trolling FTW. I find it somewhat hilarious that when I first started posting on these forums a year ago, Texas was often mocked or dismissed of as a regional school not of T14 calibre. Now, with many enthusiastic Texas 0Ls and a few 1Ls posting regularly, Texas's TLS rep has increased dramatically.

Michigan and Cornell both have worse locations than Duke.Agreed. Duke has always seemed like a damn good school to me, just a damn good school in a damn bad location.

Texas is a good school but it isn't of T14 caliber is it? Don't you have to be at the top of your class to land firm jobs in places like DC , NYC, and the bay area from Texas( especially DC) ? Even then won't most of the V20 firms be a reach?

Yes, I went to UNC for undergrad. I'm from NC and not rich, so why would I have gone anywhere else? I won't get into any stupid rivalry crap right now, other than pointing out that I got a great education for next to nothing, and I wasn't surrounded by a bunch of rich, entitled, displaced, northern douchebags eitherJoan Manuel Serrat wrote:i hope you go to Carolina for UG...if not...the hell is that turd doin in you avatar?dresq wrote:Because there have never been a lot of Duke students on this board until this year, and even now none of us really troll for Duke the way that UVA, Berkeley, and Michigan students troll for their schools. Since everyone loves USNWR rankings so much, clocking in at #5 this year in best places to live in the US... DURHAM, NC!! If you've never spent time in the triangle, don't make stupid assumptions.Esc wrote:Agreed. Duke has always seemed like a damn good school to me, just a damn good school in a damn bad location.

Part of the reason Duke gets so much hate on TLS is because everyone on here is from New Jersey or Orange County.

What difference does it make? It's still ranked top 10. My point is that Durham isn't a "bad location" to live. Also, it's ranked number 5. It is alphabetical, but my statement was not incorrect. If you have a problem with the methodology, take it up with USNWR, not me.tralinds wrote:Clocking in at #5?dresq wrote:Since everyone loves USNWR rankings so much, clocking in at #5 this year in best places to live in the US... I'm not hating on Durham, since I've never been. But I'm hesitant to jump at this list as I'm not exactly sure what factors they're including. With a quick description like "Things to do" and "Low Prices" leading off the article, I'm not sure these necessarily dictate what places are the best to live in. In addition, along with Durham the list includes some other fantastic places, like Albuquerque, New Mexico, or Boise, Idaho.dresq wrote:Since everyone loves USNWR rankings so much, clocking in at #5 this year in best places to live in the US... Sorry, no more hating on Durham. Like I said, no experience there and I'm only being like 17% serious with this response. Just wanted to point that out because I must like to hear myself... type.
Not exactly sure I'd agreed. Ann Arbor is cold, yes. It is also a pretty awesome little city. Haven't been to Ithaca so I don't know, but having spent much of my childhood in Ann Arbor, I can say that I loved the area.kurama20 wrote:Michigan and Cornell both have worse locations than Duke.Agreed. Yeah, that's true. Although after looking at some of GULC's peer schools I'd rather aim to be one of the 40-50 UT grads getting clerkships as opposed to one of the 30-40 GULC grads. Of course, my chances of getting a clerkship coming out of any school are slim slim slim, so it's not like it matters.snotrocket wrote:They fall in 7th by number of clerks, right alongside Columbia and NYU. I've spent a good deal of time in the area, and have hay-ated it more and more over time.dresq wrote:Since everyone loves USNWR rankings so much, clocking in at #5 this year in best places to live in the US... Texas places better out of state than most people expect. 30% of the class leaves Texas after graduation, while many of the top-of-the-class students self-select to stay in Texas. For a V10 or V20 firm, DOJ, or other prestigious job you would obviously want to be top 10 - 20%, but anyone above class median has a decent shot at a good job out of state, especially if they were non-Texas residents to begin with and have connections to a certain market.Texas is a good school but it isn't of T14 caliber is it? Re: Clerkship Placement Stats 2009
That sounds good but I'm still kind of hesitant to believe that Texas is as great out of state simply due to the fact that the employment stats for UT cannot even be accessed without a passcode. To me that sends the exact opposite message as what Vandy does. Why can't anyone but committed students see the employment stats? There is really no good reason for that and it makes me skeptical about their placement.Texas places better out of state than most people expect. 30% of the class leaves Texas after graduation, while many of the top-of-the-class students self-select to stay in Texas. Re: Clerkship Placement Stats 2009
Don't get me started on Boalt....I actually think they are overrated and that outside of Cali they do not have the placement power that a lot of people think they do. UVA and Mich have much better national placement than Boalt. Still, not giving employment stats to anyone who has not been accepted is not something that instills faith in a school's placement ability. Look at what Mich,UVA, Duke, and Vandy do.The same applies for Berkeley.
UT freely gives out (pretty) detailed employment statistics to admitted students before they commit.

Duke is only 13th in reputation? That's surprising. I guess it's because the school rose to prominence just recently a la NYU law school.
You would think that a school which has never been ranked outside the top 10 since USNWR first started a rankings system would be higher in rep.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
