Not to derail the thread, but where did you get the $285k calculation? Is that assuming interest if you finance the COA with loans?

Have you visited either/both of the schools? If so what were your impressions? I'm a Dukie so I'm totally biased - but that difference in price tag is an awful lot of money to be stuck paying back. Also - I'm working in Boston after graduation so feel free to PM if you have specific questions about Duke's placement power.

In case anyone was curious, I sent in my deposit at Stanford today. After visiting, I couldn't imagine being anywhere else, and I'm willing to pay for that. You can all say "I told you so" when I have to start repaying my debt.

Like speeding in a fancy sports car straight toward a brick wall, the result won't be pretty, but might as well enjoy the ride until you get there...redsox wrote:In case anyone was curious, I sent in my deposit at Stanford today. The fact that you are willing to pay 200K more to shoot for a biglaw job is insane dude

If they were the same schools in the same place with the same professors and the same students, I wouldn't be willing to pay $200,000 for the difference in biglaw chances. But they're not.kaiser wrote:Like speeding in a fancy sports car straight toward a brick wall, the result won't be pretty, but might as well enjoy the ride until you get there...redsox wrote:In case anyone was curious, I sent in my deposit at Stanford today. If they were the same schools in the same place with the same professors and the same students, then there wouldn't be any price difference at all. Of course there is a difference in all the factors you mentioned, and of course all of them have some level of marginal benefit that would justify a marginal price increase. But I just don't understand for the life of me how you concluded that the marginal benefit difference outweighs the marginal price difference, especially given your goals.redsox wrote:If they were the same schools in the same place with the same professors and the same students, I wouldn't be willing to pay $200,000 for the difference in biglaw chances. One of my college friends turned down RTK for Stanford to do public interest. People will generally do anything for a few extra slots on the US News survey. Also remember OP has family money to consider.kaiser wrote:If they were the same schools in the same place with the same professors and the same students, then there wouldn't be any price difference at all. Anyways, no reason for fighting a moot point.

OP -- would you have turned down full tuition at a T4-6 for that Stanfjord prestige? At any rate, run the dish for me while you're in Palo Alto.

Uhh...kind of turned off by Columbia and (the idea of) Chicago (didn't visit - got myself waitlisted by declining the interview offer - but that's another story). So maybe I'd pay for Stanford over them. Hard to say without being in that position. I did love NYU, even though New York kind of scares the shit out of me. With full tuition I'm not sure I could have turned NYU down. But I didn't have the luxury of that option.Power_of_Facing wrote:OP -- would you have turned down full tuition at a T6 for that Stanfjord prestige? Also, the dish looks awesome. If I get off my ass and start running again (I kind of burned out in high school and haven't run for more than a couple months at a time since), I'll definitely check that out.

It's crazy (in a good way) how much more debt averse TLS is now when compare to when I first started lurking

Yeah, but see, I already paid the $500 deposit. I mean, now that I'm that far in, I might as well just fork over the other $200k+. Sunk costs? What are those?Hutz_and_Goodman wrote:Please don't be crazy--go to Duke.
