Which Law Schools will close down first? Forum

After looking at the data, is there anything you feel can be determined by this data in regards to a law school closing? Of course there are major drops in applications across the board, but Charlotte and Elon have had an enormous increase of applicants (partly b/c they were only founded in 2006) yet, nobody would claim them to be "good" law schools. Same with Regent and Arizona Summit. It almost appears like there's no rhyme or reason as to which schools have had an increase in applicants from 2008-2013. Of course that's just from my brief overlook of the data while at work. haha.

Perhaps Spivey should do the amount of matriculates class of 2010 and to the class of 2013. The fall for some school is big.

Some schools will close. I have it on some authority that Hamline will close here in MN within a few years.

Hamline and St Thomas should both close. Minnesota would do well with only UM and WM.

Hamline closing with almost certainly save St. Thomas.

Yeah, there's a certain Survivor element at work w/those two. Would be nice to see what UM and WM employment look like without them both, however.

What kind of authority? I think that the numbers don't look good for them enrollment wise but bringing in a new dean and not laying off any professors doesn't seem to suggest they are planning on closing the place.

1) a relative worked there and said it is a disaster.2
2) A professor at my school (not hamline) told me the previous Dean left because he thought the school should close, but the rest of the administration wanted to keep going. (Of course, that means they don't want to close but wtv)

I imagine the TJSL lenders are stuck. No point in foreclosing. I'm sure they could repurpose the dorms that were just built, but what the hell would they do with the law building?

Looks like minnbills was right about Hamline, kind of. Breaking news out of St. Paul this morning is that apparently Hamline and William Mitchell will be combining law schools beginning this fall, pending ABA approval.

I would think Cooley. I lived in Michigan in the East Lansing area. And let me tell you, those lawyers are some idiots. You would lose with a lawyer from there. Plus Cooley claims they are better than Yale. JD mill they are.

I just don't see it. They are really "mission driven" and seem to have a ton of support from the main campus. And while they've had huge drops in the number of applications, their enrollment numbers are only down ~12% from 2010. LSAT median hasn't plummeted either, although it has dropped a bit. Will they stay open forever? Maybe not. But being the first? I don't think so.

What impact, if any, do you see this having on employment prospects out of UMN? I'm considering a full ride there among other options.

You have to assume that with ~200 fewer law grads per year in Minnesota, the employment prospects are going to go up. I might have done that math wrong, someone correct me if I'm off

I read the press release as them committing to keep the class size close to what it is now. They are just going to use this as an opportunity to get rid of redundant faculty and admins. Wonder if tuition will go down or they just are trying to get back into the black.

Hamline’s law school, which opened in 1975, saw its enrollment drop by a third in the last five years, to 439 students in 2013-14 school year.

Mitchell, which was founded in 1900, saw a 17 percent drop in the same period, to 809 students.

The new school will have about 900 students, Janus said.

I feel for the Mitchell grads. WM is a reputable school in MN. Hamline? Not so much.

This is just a face-saving way for Hamline to close its law school without taking too much of a publicity hit for doing so. Previous mergers (Dickinson/PSU DCL/MSU) have involved a big university that wanted a law school absorbing a free-standing school instead of starting from scratch. This is a small university off-loading its students onto a free-standing law school.

UM and Mitchell should be the only law schools in the state. I guess this gets halfway to the goal, with St Thomas remaining.
