Re: Space Law
Are you an NASA engineer and/or actual current/previous astronaut with close personal ties to the most influential people in the world?
if the answer is yes don't apply to a school based on a desire to practice "space law."
if the answer is no don't apply to a school based on a desire to practice "space law."

There is such a thing as space law, and there have been cases on it. The odds of any lawyer having one case that touches on it in their career are astronomical.

Re: Space Law
Asteroids contain minerals and metals worth billions of dollars. There are people that invest in them. It's rare and I'd imagine they aren't going to John Doe's Space Law Shingle, but at least one or two lawyers have probably been involved in it. I don't care but it does exist. Personally, I can't understand why it matters if you're working on something involving a hedge fund or an asteroid. It's probably almost the same exact work.northwood wrote:Ron Don Volante wrote:northwood wrote:AReasonableMan wrote:There is such a thing as space law, and there have been cases on it. Re: Space Law
What is the rule? First to capture? I can honestly see a war fought on Earth about ownership of Space depending on how quick technology allowing easy extraction of minerals develops.Nekrowizard wrote:We actually had an event at NYU about property rights in space. I didn't go but I think discussion centered around the ASTEROIDS Act, and featured a guy who was an expert in the field. I've gotta say, I think you'll be facing some serious competition as a space lawyer, as everybody in my section was SUPER bummed about having one of our classes conflict w/ the talk.

i feel like the economics of precious metals are going to change a bit once someone parks an asteroid made of ten trillion tons of pure gold in LEO

Re: Space Law
So, how does one go about getting a job at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs? Do they offer 2L internships?

Re: Space Law
On the off chance that this is a serious thread, I have only seen one v100 firm with a space law practice and they only hire people from highly ranked schools. Their space law associates and partners also work in their other corporate practices as well. Just prep yourself the way you would for any corporate law gig, and then try to get a job with a space law practice.

What law firms do and what law firms say they do... are two different things

Re: Space Law
Bah. That's garbage. They basically just work with companies that make stuff that goes into space instead of actually coming up with the international regulations that govern what goes on it space. Also, it looks like they only do things with satellite producers and do absolutely no asteroid M&A work. If you're going to do space law, its the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs or nothing.Doritos wrote:For the curious. http://www.milbank.com/practices/indust ... e-and.htmlMr. Elshal wrote:On the off chance that this is a serious thread, I have only seen one v100 firm with a space law practice and they only hire people from highly ranked schools.
