Not a fan of the culture, not a fan of the city, too far away from anyone I know, no desire to work in the south (although Vandy doesn't limit this, it is harder than other schools to break out)/atresia wrote:Why? I'll bite. Remember of course that this is not a measure of the schools independent worth, just the appeal to me.

Really they could tie, since I am not that interested in attending school in Cali as my family all lives in the southeast and I want to stay relatively close. But I like Berkeley's left leanings.

Re: Rank schools in the order you would go to them
I'm a 2L. When I was applying 2 years ago:
1. Yale
2. Harvard
3. Stanford
4. Columbia
5. Chicago
6. NYU, Penn
8. Michigan
9. Virginia, Berkeley
11. Cornell
12. Duke
13. Northwestern
14. Georgetown
15. UCLA
That's it. Now, I wouldn't attend Georgetown or UCLA (or anything ranked lower than that), I would attend NYU, and possibly other schools ranked below Chicago, over Chicago, Berkeley would move down due to poor biglaw prospects, and my "preference" would be determined by scholarship money, except Northwestern would still be my last choice because I had no work experience and you compete against your classmates during screening interviews. I'd also try to avoid schools that force you to take 5 classes a semester (including LRW), which I believe include Penn and Northwestern.
