If you're shooting for LA and are a strong candidate for WUSTL, I would apply to USC and UCLA. From talking to WUSTL grads, it seems to me that WUSTL (outside of the midwest) travels much more easily to the east coast than it does to the west.

USC/UCLA are reach schools for me. Do you think WUSTL would place better than other CA schools beyond USC/UCLA (ie Irvine, Davis, Hastings) in LA?

WUSTL would not place better than any UC in LA. In all of Los Angeles County (54,000+ attorneys), there are only 100 WUSTL law grads and many of them did their undergrad in California.

Davis has 617 grads in LA county; Hastings has 1919; USC has 3999; UCLA has 5642.

I would choose any UC over WUSTL if you want to work in LA or anywhere in California for that matter. Based on the statistics, you would have to be very lucky to get a job in california straight out of WUSTL law without specific California ties.
