My friend started out making 40-50k/year in a low-COL state writing up bids for a company that does contract work for cable/telecom companies. Another started at 35-40k in an entry-level position at an insurance company. I'm not going to say that there's tons of jobs out there, but you guys have your heads in the clouds. Publishing? Get the fuck out of here.
What? People are specifically mentioning those careers as things to SKIP not go into
Yuppppp A+ reading comprehension

For the record I suggest everyone in undergrad study programming or econ. Done.
Unless you go to a school like chicago, all econ will do is tell you why you can't get a job. My boss loves hiring econ grads because it's easy to offer low pay while still getting semi competent people.
That's probably true, I went to fancy undergrad and all my econ classmates became i-bankers

Debt can make the job feel worse. Just like a lot of people who worked for two or three years at jobs with bad hours are still surprised by how oppressive firm life feels, the ability to cope with a less than ideal situation can be tied to how long you feel tied to it. The ability to rage quit, even if you never exercise it, can significantly lower the stress you feel at a job, and thus the energy you have to get through the tough parts.

As you pile on more debt, you move from "at least this pays well (and funds other aspects of my life that I love)" to "wow, all this work and I'm barely better off than if I just worked at a crapy job for three years" to "OMG, if I screw up and they fire me I am completely screwed". The first person can walk whenever they decide it's not worth it. The last person has all the stress of the job and all the stress from knowing that only that kind of job keeps them from financial ruin.

Just get a quality assurance office job. Pays 40k, 40 hours a week, 9-5, and half of the time I'm watching old episodes of HIMYM. LOL

It was dumb going to law school when I did. But we thought things would bounce back by now. Now it's clear there is nothing to bounce back to. So now it's really stupid.
How much a month are you putting towards your loans?

Are there aspects of biglaw that require more expenses then you thought you needed?

Assuming additional costs are only like 15k and that you can finish it in 3 years with the JD, can getting a joint degree be a way to hedge your sticker investment? Say a degree in MPH, MPP, MPA stuff like that. The jobs you can get with those degrees aren't probably high paying, but if the costs are minimal would it be worth it to have something to fall back on?

I can't imagine more debt ever being the answer.

No. Getting a joint degree generally narrows the job pool, not expands it.

~7k. Which is only possible because we live on my wifes earnings only.

Rent is higher. Food costs are higher. I drink a lot more.

Even with a spouse who can support you sticker debt is too much to repay on a biglaw salary.

My reckless spending is preventing me from paying more than 84k a year towards student loans.

To be fair, some of that stuff you probably can't really avoid...Rent costs are going to be whatever they are, food costs are whatever they are (and with no time to cook/grocery shop, you'll probably be eating out a lot more) etc.

I'm sure you could spend your disposable income in better ways than alcohol to increase your quality of life/ happiness.

Is that different for any meaningful job in a big city? Do doctors or bankers or engineers or programmers have more time to cook/grocery shop? Or to live not in cities?

isn't there a thread somewhere on here that has people's actual loan payments/financial situation? I remember seeing it before but don't remember the title.

These "list of anecdotes" threads are not helpful to anyone. I dunno why they give TLSers sperg-boners.

Let's be real. If I'm paying back 7k in student loans every month (over $200/day), I'm not giving up alcohol too.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
