Re: Take the money and Run - Sticker = stupid
Debt can make the job feel worse. Just like a lot of people who worked for two or three years at jobs with bad hours are still surprised by how oppressive firm life feels, the ability to cope with a less than ideal situation can be tied to how long you feel tied to it. The ability to rage quit, even if you never exercise it, can significantly lower the stress you feel at a job, and thus the energy you have to get through the tough parts.
As you pile on more debt, you move from "at least this pays well (and funds other aspects of my life that I love)" to "wow, all this work and I'm barely better off than if I just worked at a crapy job for three years" to "OMG, if I screw up and they fire me I am completely screwed". The first person can walk whenever they decide it's not worth it. The last person has all the stress of the job and all the stress from knowing that only that kind of job keeps them from financial ruin.

Just get a quality assurance office job. Pays 40k, 40 hours a week, 9-5, and half of the time I'm watching old episodes of HIMYM. LOL

Assuming additional costs are only like 15k and that you can finish it in 3 years with the JD, can getting a joint degree be a way to hedge your sticker investment? Say a degree in MPH, MPP, MPA stuff like that. The jobs you can get with those degrees aren't probably high paying, but if the costs are minimal would it be worth it to have something to fall back on?

I can't imagine more debt ever being the answer.gatz77 wrote:Assuming additional costs are only like 15k and that you can finish it in 3 years with the JD, can getting a joint degree be a way to hedge your sticker investment? No. Getting a joint degree generally narrows the job pool, not expands it.gatz77 wrote:Assuming additional costs are only like 15k and that you can finish it in 3 years with the JD, can getting a joint degree be a way to hedge your sticker investment? Even with a spouse who can support you sticker debt is too much to repay on a biglaw salary.Desert Fox wrote:~7k. My reckless spending is preventing me from paying more than 84k a year towards student loans.bjsesq wrote:I know you think you made a point in there somewhere.muskies970 wrote:Sounds like personal problems

To be fair, some of that stuff you probably can't really avoid...Rent costs are going to be whatever they are, food costs are whatever they are (and with no time to cook/grocery shop, you'll probably be eating out a lot more) etc.

I'm sure you could spend your disposable income in better ways than alcohol to increase your quality of life/ happiness.Desert Fox wrote:My reckless spending is preventing me from paying more than 84k a year towards student loans.bjsesq wrote:I know you think you made a point in there somewhere.muskies970 wrote:Sounds like personal problems

Is that different for any meaningful job in a big city? Do doctors or bankers or engineers or programmers have more time to cook/grocery shop? Or to live not in cities?KatyMarie wrote:muskies970 wrote:*Reads like personal problemsbjsesq wrote:I know you think you made a point in there somewhere.muskies970 wrote:Sounds like personal problems

isn't there a thread somewhere on here that has people's actual loan payments/financial situation? I remember seeing it before but don't remember the title.

These "list of anecdotes" threads are not helpful to anyone. I dunno why they give TLSers sperg-boners.scoobers wrote:isn't there a thread somewhere on here that has people's actual loan payments/financial situation? I remember seeing it before but don't remember the title.

Let's be real. If I'm paying back 7k in student loans every month (over $200/day), I'm not giving up alcohol too.muskies970 wrote:As long as he prefaces his posts to 0L's where he tries to come across as a knowledgeable unbiased expert with, "I drink to cope with my problems", sure.anyriotgirl wrote: jfc let DF have his one nice thing
