Hipsters in Law School Forum

Edit: I listen to indie music, read pitchfork and the onion, and I occasionally wear vintage clothes. I've never worn skinny jeans, but I once wore an ironic mustache, although only for a week. I don't drink PBR, and honestly, if you're going for a Mexican beer, Modelo >>> Tecate. I'm a smoker. I eat meat. I am physically active. I wear aviators, not wayfarers. I love watching and playing sports, and I love sports bars. I can speak as eloquently about the fundamental problems of the BCS as I can the class politics of Vampire Weekend. Point being, I have traits that people typically associate with being a hipster, and I also have traits people associate with being a bro. So what am I? A new breed? The hipster-bro? Or am I just a douche?

Liking sports as a hipster is so ironic

You know, I think somewhere, deep down, in the middle of the Saturdays I spend in front of the TV watching college football or basketball, I realize that what I'm doing is utterly ridiculous, that it's all just a waste of time and we have this huge sociocultural establishment that has built sport up to be this idealized thing that's it most definitely not. But I'm a product of that establishment, and I grew up watching sports, and I genuinely do enjoy watching sports, so I kind of put my feelings aside most of the time.

But when it's mid-March and 100 hrs of ESPN's weekly program is dedicated to the same rehashed arguments about the NCAA tournament, seeds, bubble teams, locks, automatic bids, etc. it's kind of hard not to feel like the whole thing's kind of stupid. But I feel like the knowledge and perspective that you get just by realizing that what you're doing is in some ways very, very silly, is something to be valued, and something people don't experience that often.

I don't know where you guys are, but your descriptions of hipsters seem pretty passe; or maybe you just know passe hipsters. PBR hasn't been a signature drink since 2003 (Sparks reigned until a year or so ago, and many still have stockpiles and a deli with an old, decomposing supply is a goldmine), I don't think anyone has mentioned fixies yet, there has been very little discussion of lofts, and beards have been largely left out, even though they've been ubiquitous for three years or so.

Also, yes, hipster hating often verges on homophobia. Hipsterism after all, is a very gay-influenced cultural movement. And for those who are bothered so much by boys in skinny jeans, you might want to spend some time working through what's making you so uncomfortable.
Edit: And yes, I realize that the first paragraph here very much sounds like a "You don't know these cool obscure things, loser" hipster style statement. I guess it sort of is. Also, sorry for bumping this.

You need to remember not all of us are from NYC. Hipsters in central Illinois are at least 4 years behind NYC hipsters.

Obviously, if you do not live in Williamsburg, Greenpoint or Bushwick, you are not actually hip and therefore not a hipster. Sorry central Iowa, or whatever you said.

That is, however not what I said. The quote was "hipster hating often verges on homophobia." Of course, not all anti-hipster sentiment ties in with anti-gay sentiment (though I suppose it would be hipper to say queer), but it does often overlap. Note the large amount of comments about boys wearing "girls' jeans," being weenies, etc.

Studied (f)art history in college, lived in Williamsburg for several years, can carry on an at-length discussion about the aesthetic and stylistic differences between Japandroids and Japanther, have tattoos, have played rock shows in converted industrial lofts, drink light beer and rail whiskey...

The Georgetown and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods in DC are full of hipsters and the groupies who bang them and want to be just like them, so I'm sure there are some enrolled at GULC and GW. I was kind of into the DC hipster thing for a bit, then realized how douchy the whole scene is. DC is full of hipsters in general.

A true hipster (oxymoron, I know, but relatively speaking) would only be caught dead in law school. No, seriously, the only way a hipster would subject him/her or itself (for the metaphysical/all is energy hipster) to law school is if it were a prank after they already died and one of their hipster buddies slid their casket into the law library or something.

A true hipster doesn't accept the system of law as a legitimate entity nor would they study it, even ironically.

I've just never seen as many slacks and collared shirts as 'going out' wear in any other town. That is, of course, a shallow judgement of what it means to be a 'bro,' but it was the feeling I got.

They congregate on U St. and in Cleveland Park, mostly. I don't think they make up the majority of the DC population, but they are very visible.
