You say you don't want big law, but you're fixated on this idea that you're planning to be in the top 10% and you're doing research on big law firms. Something doesn't add up here.
Are you committed to the types of jobs generally available to UF grads? Or are you shooting for something far less attainable?

I did research on big law firms because I know that's mainly where grads from top law schools will be at. I just wanted to get an idea of how many grads who didn't attend t14 schools get into those firms in the event that I do change my mind about big law, but that's unlikely. Even if I don't do big law I still plan on aiming for the top of my class. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I would ideally want to work in a firm that has around 80 attorneys, which doesn't fall under big law. I don't want to work in a small firm, but a medium sized one where I could eventually become a partner.BigZuck wrote:You say you don't want big law, but you're fixated on this idea that you're planning to be in the top 10% and you're doing research on big law firms. If you want to make a legal career in Florida you can't go wrong with UF . . . Worse case scenario you end up bottom of the class as an ASA or APD in some no name Florida town on PSLF . . . If you can't live with that outcome don't go to law school . . .

I'm thinking that 13.9% Non-Employed and 7.4% ST/PT Employed represent something worse than that scenario.wolfintally wrote:If you want to make a legal career in Florida you can't go wrong with UF . . . That's putting it mildly. 20% is a significant part of a class, OP. That's 62 folks who are kind of assed-out on the whole law school gamble. So, go in with your eyes wide open.TheProdigal wrote:I'm thinking that 13.9% Non-Employed and 7.4% ST/PT Employed represent something worse than that scenario.wolfintally wrote:If you want to make a legal career in Florida you can't go wrong with UF . . . But, please, go to law school if you want to. I think it's important that you know what you're getting yourself into, however, and I think the advice you've gotten here has made that clear.

1. Do you really know what being a lawyer entails?manda94 wrote:you're saying I shouldn't go to law school?Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote:FTFYwolfintally wrote:If you want to make a legal career in Florida you can't go wrong with UF . . . 2. Have you talked to at least five practicing lawyers and asked them how they spend their day and whether they would do it all again?
3. Have you done a minimum of 100 hours of research about the legal profession and market?
4. Can you identify the job you would like to get, and can you identify a significant number of people in your position who have gotten such a job in recent years?
5. Is it no longer possible to maximize your scholarship/minimize your debt load via LSAT retakes?
If you can answer yes to all five of those questions, you have my permission to go to UF at $30k of debt.

I can answer yes to all your questions. I know I can't get a full ride anywhere (well, to a reputable school), so to me $30k debt at the number 1 law school in the state I plan on practicing is not a big price to pay.Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote:1.
