I would agree with these but add:Brut wrote:nyu

Pros:
- From what I've heard, people at NYU are way more tolerable than other reputable law schools in the city (and the country for that matter).
- Many amazing professors and visitors (a byproduct of it being a good school, but also being in the heart of NYC helps draw them in)
Cons:
I agree strongly with these 2, however would add that being in NYC can have both upsides and downsides beyond just the cost. With the school being where it is (and fairly spread out) there is definitely a lesser sense of a school community than some smaller college towns.
Also our sports suck.

On that note: W&L
Pros:
1. Friendly professors and very accessible
2. Beautiful scenery and town
3. Tight knit student body
4. You get your own carrel
5. Nothing else to do so good for concentrating on studies
6. Cheap as balls
Cons:
1. Nothing to do so you might kill yourself
2. Job placement
3. Weird freakin curriculum (take international law and admin law first year)

the fact that NYU students feel the need to claim this proudly & repeatedly should tell everyone what they need to knowsims1 wrote: - From what I've heard, people at NYU are way more tolerable than other reputable law schools in the city (and the country for that matter)

The only things that matter are jobs and costs. Everything else is (probably) the exact same at every law school in the country.

UIUC
Pro
1. COL is super cheap
2. Lots of scholarship money available
3. Biglaw is definitely possible, which makes 1 and 2 even better
4. Very active and helpful alumni
5. Fun College town
Cons
1. Big law is not the likely outcome
2. Huge undergrad scene, so if you're older, it can get annoying
3. The reach is really just Chicago and St. Louis, if you're looking for jobs outside of those areas, better go elsewhere
4. Can feel like High School a lot of the times, but could just be law school

"Students here are more chill" is a flame. There's no way to verify that unless you've done 1L at a bunch of different schools.

AFAIK, no one said this. People just said people at their school are chill, which is perfectly legit.john7234797 wrote:"Students here are more chill" is a flame. There's no way to verify that unless you've done 1L at a bunch of different schools.

5. Beautiful facilities/library/surrounding campus
Cons:
1. New Haven
2. Vending machines are overpriced

U$C
Pros:
1. Alumni network. It's there but probably overstated.
2. Small class size.
3. There are worse places to be than LA.
4. The overall campus is nice.
5. Girls are hot?
Cons:
1. Jobs. Even getting LA big law is rough. Lots of top students striking out.
2. CoL
3. Almost entirely useless CSO
4. Shitty neighborhood around USC
5. Law school and library looks shitty

TBF, no grades sounds amazing. I would slack off like crazy. But I guess that's why I wouldn't have gotten into Yale

Re: 5 PROS + 5 CONS of YOUR LAW SCHOOL
I'll try to keep this thread on track, because despite the fact that job placement and costs are #1, these factors can matter at the margins
Penn
Pros:
1. Job placement. I believe the last stats had us at 75-80% for BL/FC.... I think that number balloons to 90% if you simply: a) bid NYC and bid/mail your home market heavily, and b)are a pleasant person.
2. The resources at your disposal are pretty incredible. Between professors, classmates, the infrastructure of Penn as a whole.
3. The facilities. Penn Law had four beautiful buildings, and a courtyard that is to die for.
4. The people. This is a double-edged sword (see cons), but it is very easy to make a group of life-long friends here. Additionally, you never see people turning on one another during 1L, which friends at other t14s say can be prevalent.
5. Philly. For someone who didn't grow up in a major city, its the perfect mix of manageable and fun.
Cons:
1. The cost. The distribution of $$$ means you're either getting a ton of aid, or just enough to justify attending, while still leaving yourself screwed if you don't get BL.
2. Lack of non-NYC focus. You'll be frustrated by OCI and CPP in general if you don't want to end up in the Big Apple.
3. Ungraded LRW. I think a lot of 1L can come down to how little time you can put into this class and still put together passable assignments. I don't necessarily like that disincentivization (not a word, but you get my point).
4. The people. While it's easy to make good friends, the place can definitely be clicky too.
5. Housing. I'm just really not impressed with the options in the city. Very bimodal in that everything under 1,000 is okay, but not great....but to see a markedly better property, you're going to be looking at 1,600-1,800.

Re: 5 PROS + 5 CONS of YOUR LAW SCHOOL
Non-T14 school:
1. The people. I like almost everyone. There are a few people I don't really care for, but it's extremely easy to make friends.
2. The professors. Easy to talk to. They really look out for you and one of them already got me my summer job (I know a few other with judicial externships and even a person with a paid job at a firm already).
3. Social environment. Lots of activities and events. It's really hard to be bored here. When I am not studying, I feel like I'm on a lesser vacation (but still a vacation nonetheless).
4. Lots of good places to eat. Almost everything here is family owned. Lots of variety and food is pretty authentic.
5. Cost: Really cheap place to live. Tons of financial aid (I think?).
1. Mediocre job prospects. Only 65% non school funded long term full time legal jobs. Bad big law+fed clerkship %.
2. Desolate area. Seriously. Outside of this town, there is literally nothing.
3. Lack of big chain stores and restaurants in the area. It gets kind of annoying if you want to buy clothes.
4. I bike most of the time, but on occasions I will drive. Driving here is seriously a pain in the ass.

Re: 5 PROS + 5 CONS of YOUR LAW SCHOOL
UIUC Round 2:
1: Job placement is excellent, Big Law is more than just a pipe dream
2: Scholarship money is generous and guaranteed, tuition is also guaranteed not to rise
3: People are extremely friendly and social. Everyone hangs out with everyone, not super clique-ish. I genuinely like 99% of my classmates.
4: Excellent bar scene(s) split between downtown Champaign and Campus
5: Low cost of living, don't really have to worry about money
------------------------------------------------
-1: Facilities are pretty much hideous and don't inspire "the grand study of law"
-2: Illinois sports are lame as hell, tailgates are a joke compared to other B1G schools
-3: Still feeling the scandal, although rankings are headed back to normal
-4: You have to live in central Illinois, which is like a less free/more corrupt version of Indiana
-5: Undergrad greek scene is way too pervasive
