I went to middle and high school in Chapel Hill (now also college) and I agree with the posters who have recommended Duke. Durham isn't the most family-friendly area, imo, but Chapel Hill definitely is. The CHCCS school district is great, and the transit system makes it really easy to get around the triangle area.

If OP was Mormon he wouldn't be asking the Q, he'd just be going to UVA

someone's not familiar with the Rex E Lee Center at UVA Law.

UVA Law = the HLS of Utah

I was not aware. Thank you for that knowledge. I just thought Brigham Young was the one-stop-shop for all Mormon education.

You know there are lots of people with families in all these cities right? If you don't think raising kids in a big city is the best move for you, then don't do it, but it's bizarre to act like it's some trailblazing notion. People make it work.

There is also a good chance you'll end up working in NYC after law school so keep that in mind.

Many people raise families in NYC. It isn't an impossible quest.

I don't know how you will live anywhere with no income coming in.

I'm not sure I get which way this is supposed to cut. You may end up in NYC anyway, so OP should live somewhere else (read: cheaper) while OP can? Or that since OP will probably end up there anyway, OP should just move there now? If the latter, I don't get it really; surely OP would move in-town anyway once OP gets some cashflow.

It seems to me that the issue here is reducing marginal costs during the no-income period that is law school, not that it is somehow impossible to raise a family in the city.

Northwest Indiana is a solid option if you get into U Chi or NU. Good schools, low taxes, and good neighborhoods. From where I live its a 35-40min drive to NU and a 25-30 minute drive to UC. Taking the Southshore is an option but I think the train is more of a hassle.

Maybe 120%. I help people move, pray, read scriptures, and everything.

I wasn't aware of a high LDS presence at UVA - I've always thought of UVA as just a big party school. That news definitely bumps UVA up on my preference list.

Well I'm not sure why you think that's the issue since the op is pretty clearly concerned about lifestyle considerations, not money. Chicago isn't even expensive.

My point was these cities are fine places to have families.

You should definitely visit then, or at least email the Rex E Lee student group and talk to some folks. UVA *is* a big party school, but that isn't all it is.
