Hahaha, this made me laugh and clap my hands. It has become a TLS trope. Having said that, gobosox, I understand your argument, but it applies better to your situation, as you seem to have money offers from T14 schools. I do not have the same options. If I get a higher LSAT score, perhaps I'll heed your advice.jbagelboy wrote:Every time someone on TLS talks about a law school "opening doors", 20 puppies get burnt alive.hichvichwoh wrote:This thread is not about yougobosox wrote: Based on everything I've read, Georgetown opens significantly more doors than GW. I'm saying pick a school based on how good of a school it is-- figure out a way to make the money work. (To contextualize, I worked my butt off for a while and saved up 100k and got a scholarship before going to law school so that I could fulfill that goal.)
You can make the money work-- it just takes some work.
Also FWIW, the only reason I am considering G'Town is for the location over Penn-- the money is far secondary.
Bonus to 25 for "significantly" more.

Re: GWU $40K vs. GULC sticker
Since I didn't see it in the thread, what is your GPA? If you have above a 3.5, you would be doing yourself a serious disservice by going to GWU or GULC this fall. Retake for a 170+ and you'll have a clear shot at T6 or possible full rides from some T14s next year.Pragmatic Gun wrote:I want to work in high-profile public sector work (UCLA, DOJ, UN) ideally, but I want some flexibility in case I don't get it (meaning big law work as a back-up, as silly as that sounds). I want to work in DC, as I love politics and want to work in that field. I would love to work in government (the DOJ, which I understand is extremely difficult, but anything civil rights related) or in a non-profit that works on human rights.
I have a few friends and ties there: an organization I worked for temporarily has their headquarters there. An organizer the national office sent to the NY branch said he would recommend me for one of their Legal Fellowships if I ever go to DC. So there's that. I have a cousin who lives there and interns at a congressional office. At the very least, I won't be lonely. :p
I have no debt from undergrad but little savings. My girlfriend is willing to move to DC with me after she finishes undergrad and find work.
Where should I go? I got a 167. I'll retake the LSAT in June, but assuming I don't get the higher score I want, which would be better?
UPDATE: the people have spoken. GWU it is. I feel more comfortable with the safer bet.
EDIT:
I see your profile lists your GPA as 3.8, and from a good undergrad institution, and you're a URM. I definitely advise you against settling for GWU/GULC. Retake your LSAT, get 170+, and you're a shoe-in for T6.

Re: GWU $40K vs. GULC sticker
Thanks for the advice. Many people have suggested that. I registered for the June LSAT (I got waitlisted, which is frustrating). I have been waitlisted at NYU and reserved at Columbia. I'm considering waiting til September and studying more for the test. I already have a job. I guess the only drawback is not getting a higher score and wasting another year. I'm taking a practice test Saturday to see how much studying I really need.ymmv wrote:Since I didn't see it in the thread, what is your GPA? Good plan! And keep in mind, it's not "wasting another year" to keep working if it means vastly improving your employment/income/quality-of-life prospects for the rest of your life.Pragmatic Gun wrote:Thanks for the advice. I got a 169 on my PT. Not bad since I've only done a few questions and a couple of games in the past few days as a warm up. Before that, the last thing LSAT-related I touched was the December '13 test. All I need to do is drill and we'll see how it goes.

WTF is is bad advice.gobosox wrote:Depends on what the dealer has.uncreative wrote:The books says to surrender in that situation. This is like a game of blackjack. I have a 16. Do I really want to hit and hope the next card is low and not bust (Georgetown), or should I stand and stay with GW?
OP, I am facing a similar choice between Gtown and Penn, but in my case GTown is your GW.
The only thing that is keeping me from going with Penn is GTown's location. IMO, you're crazy to not go with Georgetown. Don't be bought-- just go to the better school, that way you don't have to say "I could have done better."

Yeah. I was between GT with 30K and GW with 90K. Took GW, and feel OK about it. Saving 60K is a big deal.rahulg91 wrote:WTF is is bad advice.gobosox wrote:Depends on what the dealer has.uncreative wrote:The books says to surrender in that situation. This is like a game of blackjack. I got a 166 on my third take, a point lower than the second one. I feel like dying.

Skip law school if these are your only options.

I go to GW, almost went to GT. I can't in good faith recommend anyone go to either school. Their both traps.

GW ED is fine if you don't want biglaw. If you do, do not go here.

I go to GT, and I think "can't recommend anyone go" is a little strong. I'd fully agree that no one should go at anything close to sticker price though, and no one should go who is BigLaw or bust.flawschoolkid wrote:I go to GW, almost went to GT. Also, yes, I'm a 1L if that's what that means. But even if you acknowledge that GULC has worse employment than the rest of the T14, saying that no one should ever go there is akin to saying no one should ever go to Vanderbilt or Texas, which seems pretty extreme.

But you don't need to add that you go to Georgetown to make that recommendation. I just think it's funny to see people recommend a school before they're even done with 1L. I've seen multiple posters doing it recently.

I'm not sure sane people should go to law school, but I'm definitely sure that anything less than 75% scholarly T14 or HYS is objectively bad.TheSpanishMain wrote:Huh?Mal Reynolds wrote:(Isn't even an employment on one yet)TheSpanishMain wrote:I go to GT, and I think "can't recommend anyone go" is a little strong. Yeah, fair point I suppose. I have anecdotal evidence from talking to 2 and 3Ls, but I don't claim I have a ton of super secret GULC insight after two months.

Then again that's massive self reporting bias and im holding my breath until I see the NLJ/LST numbers.
