Most of the NU people I've met have been way more awkward than my UofC classmates. Always wandering around overdressed, asking for business cards, and neglecting to finish their drinks.
I'm really sick of this flame.

We had a joint bar review at the trashiest bar in town. The NU kids got drunk, got inappropriate, got laid.

The UChi students brought a deck of cards and played spoons in the basement with straws.

Afterwards, the UChi students accused us of being awkward.

Maybe things have changed since you left. The opposite thing happened at the last two joint BR'S.

Why are we having this argument? This is incredibly stupid.

See what I did there?

I'm out of here...because there are actually things to do in downtown Chicago on a Saturday night.

I've only known a couple NU grads and they did the same thing (asked for business cards).

I don't really think UChicago grads are that weird or that smart. They're just typical law grads (mediocrely intelligent) etc. Given how easy it is to get in these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they seem more normal.

Care to elaborate on the "special" culture? Or just in general

Didn't mean to start a inner city war here...just trying to get a better picture of it all not based on 2 days I spent down there!

UChi students sometimes have the reputation of being overly gunner-y or academically "rigorous" and of being somewhat socially awkward. However, most of the UChi students I know have been very cool.

Although, at a joint bar review I did meet a guy who introduced himself, told me he went to H/Y/P, asked me where I went to UG, told me he was going to some big firm and then asked what I was doing this summer, which is not exactly how I'd start a conversation with a stranger at a bar.

Retake. Also, don't go to law school right after undergrad. Also, there's almost no soft-IP work out there.

Retake wasnt one of the initial options, thanks though. Also I'm 1 year out, not KJD.

Soft IP still isn't really a thing though. Is there something else you actually want to practice, that exists, that has exit options into things you'll want to spend the subsequent 2 decades doing?

All the weirdos are convinced our school isn't weird. IMO, it is. But OP could have found out which one s/he was at ASW (sounds like s/he did). Not worth debating and proving iafg's point.

Retake is still the correct option, and there's still no such thing as soft-IP.

My bad, I meant I'm currently fresh out of school. As for soft ip, I meant not related to hard sciences..which does exist considering I'm done work in a soft ip firm before. Might just be miscommunication there.

It exists in theory, but there is very little work in that area, and only a handful of firms do it. Not exactly something to pin your career aspirations on.

The only legit reason under the circumstances you're describing to take UChi is if you have any aspirations to clerk or become an academic down the road. You'll have the same chances at the same midwestern firms from both schools. Sounds like you'll have significantly less debt at NU. I don't see what the hold-up is?

FWIW the 2 UChi kids that summered at my firm were both chill, sociable bros.

What's up with telling OP to retake when you don't even know what s/he scored? Using retake as a one-size-fits-all mantra is silly and weakens the value of the advice when it is apt.

This anecdote doesn't necessarily seem so damning. From my read, could be you asked a guy in law school where he went to undergrad (probably the most popular first icebreaker), he responded and asked back, normal, then you asked him where he was working this summer (not quite as popular but far from unheard of), he responded and asked the same, and then you got offended by his very normal responses. Or maybe this isn't how it went down?

Sorry if it wasn't clear from the order I wrote it out, he volunteered the info first. It was basically "Hey I'm so and so and I went to X, what about you?" and then "Oh that's cool, so do you know where you're going this summer? I'm at Y." I wasn't offended or anything, I just thought it was a weird way to introduce yourself, especially asking about summer employment when that's a pretty sensitive topic for some people. And anyway, it's no big deal, I wasn't trying to be controversial.

And @Mal you're cool with me dude.

So with decision day almost here, looks like it's boiled down to one clear issue. Comfort vs. outcomes/higher ceiling.

The poll is ironically nearly dead even..should be a fun Easter Sunday deliberating all of this

So exactly the stats that most warrant retaking? You're leaving $100k on the table by your stubbornness. You'll never have the opportunity to earn free money like this.

Its so ridiculous that 0L's worry about tenuous issues like whether you'll regret not taking Chicago in the middle of your career, while ignoring money on the table. I'm just twonyrars out of LS, and already feel the importance of my LS fading relative to my work experience. But I'd feel the impact of $100k for a decade.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
