As someone considering Suffolk, I want to know if this really matters in the grand scheme of things. Suffolk is so huge - there are going to be a wide range of student performances and employment outcomes. I have no illusions that Suffolk is anything but a huge risk. Trying to measure the reaction.
Suffolk just went from awful idea to awful idea. Let's face facts: this changes little about the very, very bad school you are considering.

It doesn't make any sense to attend Suffolk. You would be much better off either retaking the LSAT or working, saving money, and starting a business.

Scene: midlaw office in Richmond.

Hiring partner: "Alright, here's our OCI schedule. Make sure to go out there and recruit the best and brightest students willing to work 90 hours a week for $65k a year."

Drone associate: "Sir, I noticed you have us registered for 10 interviews at Washington and Lee and only 15 interviews at William and Mary."

HP: "Yes, that's how we've done it for years. Do you have a problem with that?"

DA: "It's just that, the new USNEWS&WR rankings are out and Washington and Lee has fallen mightily while William and Mary is up."

Clown cars filled with screening attorneys race to Colonial Williamsburg. Drone associate recedes into his office for 12 hours of doc review and bourbon, certain that his diligence will earn him a fat bonus that works out to 5 dollars an hour.

No. There's no change. Suffolk was a school that was a good deal 30 years ago if you wanted to practice at a small firm in Greater Boston or work for the local government. It was a waste of money 2 years ago, last year, and now. Don't go. Retake or find something else to do with your life. And change your goddamn avatar- that show is absurd and that character a joke.

Rankings themselves shouldn't play that much of a role, in my opinion. HOWEVER, some of the factors such as employment statistics that play a major role in the rankings SHOULD play a role. The major drop in ranking for W&L (-17) should raise a red flag as it seems to be largely due to very very poor employment at graduation and 9 months post-graduation.
Like most law schools W&L has always had shit employment stats. Nothing changed from 2011 to 2012.

The fact that Sandusky's taint is creating more of a reaction than the USNWR rankings says a lot about the rankings.

(and Sandusy's taint, apparently  )

I loled too, but I meant the ability of schools to recruit students (I doubt that firms care much, but students are definitely of the mindset--oh, this is the best law school in the state according to USNWR!).

The role employment data plays into the rankings is probably responsible for the huge drops for almost all schools in Southern California. So considering how saturated that market is, hopefully the rankings dissuade a decent amount of people from enrolling in those terrible schools.

I don't pretend to understand.
Reputation is factored into the score, and Penn took a big hit from the Sandusky scandal.
That sounds like the old joke of "The Aggies just got caught cheating again, so the NCAA is expected to punish SMU severely."
