This is usually true (even more so commitment to indigent defense over grades). I think there are a couple of more prestige-whore type of PD employers (D.C. comes to mind), but experience/connections is generally the most important factor. If you're absolutely committed to being a PD, going somewhere decent but not T14, where you can do a lot of interning for employers that might hire you after graduation, for CHEAP, is a totally reasonable response. If you're not totally committed, or think you might want to try something else, then you'd probably want to go to the school with the best employment stats (which is why people here recommend the T14). Or if you can get into a T14 with a great LRAP, that's another consideration.
Edited to add: the above addresses the PD specifically. There are other kinds of PI (e.g. working for the ACLU) where pedigree will matter a lot. But for the PD, probably not.
