Lay prestige is an oxymoron.

I DON'T think this thread sucks. It probably belongs in the off-topic board since it has absolutely NOTHING to do with admissions. Isn't itfun to compare how people rank schools? Plus if you have high prestige when you go to your reunions you can whip out the name of your school and everyone will think you're dope.

From MY experience on the best coast

1. Harvard
2. Stanford
3. Yale
4. Columbia (Obama went there right?!)

Cornell (Where the heck is that?) Penn (JoePa and Sandusky jokes even though that's the wrong school), Duke (BASKETBALL, I love coach K btw), Chicago (Who?), Berkley (Hey hey hey... smoke weed everyday)

People in general definitely discount Chicago and NYU especially harshly. Yale definitely seems to be discounted a bit as well - I'd say the "elite law schools", as an average perception of an average lay-person (irrespective of geographic location), would place the most elite law schools as:

Harvard
Columbia
Georgetown

These schools definitely produce some of the most prominent alumni, have large class sizes, and in Georgetown's case reach deeply into the pool which allows more people to come in contact with it.

I definitely think the prominent alumni aspect is key too - schools like Duke, Chicago, Michigan, Northwestern, etc don't really produce any 'star-level' notable people, while the list of famous and accomplished Georgetown Law graduates rivals that of any law school in the country easily.

Yeah...this is how a conversation in a decent NYC bar will actually go:

Girl: "So what do you do?"
Guy: "Oh, I'm a one-el at Harvard Law School."
Girl: "A one-el?"
Guy: "Yeah, a first-year at Harvard Law."
Girl: "Oh...that's cool...so you're still a student."
Guy: "Yeah, so what about you?"
Girl: "I'm an associate at Goldman Sachs."
OP's in the Southeast though. That means law school, even Cooley, is pretty impressive.
yes

The whole point of spending 250k on a legal education is to sleep with copious amounts law school prestige groupies, obviously. Dat lay prestige.

This won't change the fact that the average person thinks U Chicago is the Chicago campus of the Illinois public school system.

I'm going to survey a random sample of commoners I find walking the streets tomorrow and ask them to rank law schools to settle this.

This is a pointless exercise.

But for fun, on the UChi side: Amy Klobuchar (Senator from MN).

Also, GULC alumni aren't really in the running w/ HLS and CLS. And while we're counting alumni, discarding Yale is foolish. Bill & Hillary yo!

I assume by "lay prestige" you mean which schools would be best for girls in bars. I mean, do you really give a shit how impressed your parents' friends are at a cocktail party?

Protip: The Northwestern student who isn't worried about whether his school is preftigious enough to pick up women has an infinitely better chance than the Harvard kid who is so concerned with lay preftige that he makes TLS threads about it. HTH.

I don't care much for rankings as I don't feel they matter, but I think this is fun to play. Here are my "lay prestige" rankings:

1. Harvard
2. Yale
3. Columbia
4. Stanford
5. Berkeley
6. Penn
7. Georgetown
8. Cornell
9. Duke
10. NYU
11.Northwestern
12. Chicago
13. Michigan
14. Virginia

Since there is nothing I like more than wallowing in shallowness, I feel compelled to point out that there is data on this question (kind of). Every few years, Gallup conducts a poll that asks people what they think the best university in the US is.

The basic point: Harvard dominates, Yale and Stanford are a distant second equal (with a clear East Coast / West Coast divide), and after that it's basically just whatever university is big in the city/state/region you're from.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/9109/harvard ... ublic.aspx

Of course, this isn't law school specific, but if you think the public can distinguish law school prestige from general/undergrad prestige, something is wrong with you.

Who cares? Any lay prestige of your law school is short-lived. You will graduate and go work in a firm. And no one who is not a lawyer will ever recognize the name of your firm. And you won't say, "Oh, but I went to Harvard!"

And if you work anywhere else, people will form their impressions based on your job. No one outside the law will have an opportunity to form an impression of you based on your school, unless you go to an elite school and spout off about it, in which case they will think a lot less of you.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

This is not true.

Also, like OP I'm from the South. Every time I tell someone I go to Yale, they ask if I applied to Harvard with a pitying face. Beyond that, Columbia, Duke, and Georgetown have outsized reputations for God knows what reason. A random kid at my undergrad (UF) had transferred from Cornell, and that was a huge panty dropper for reasons that are frankly beyond comprehension.
