Actually, ’87 was not an anomaly, what happened was USNWR modified its rating criteria, thus the changes.

USNWR is changing its criteria for ’13, soooooo, what will happen this time?

I'm aware. It's still an anomaly: an anomaly is just something different; it doesn't itself imply anything beyond that.

As always, thanks for the data/charts/analysis.

"T-14" exists independently of US News.

I do wonder about this - was it a term that people used even before the USNWR rankings existed?

So, do we have any idea who coined the phrase? I think we have a justification for the title, but how did T-14 become a commonly used term?

it was coined by Sir Thomas the 14th, the first known American to graduate from a "top ranked" law school.

Calm your tits, this is serious etymological research and, if useless, it's still kind of interesting.

I think it's an XOXO thing.

The older people I've talked to refer to the good schools as "the top 15 or 20."

I agree it's interesting. You have my +1 to keep on asking questions.

But as you've already been informed, Dingbat is dead.

Negative. It is a term that evolved because of USNews. The top 14 have essentially been the same since USNews started ranking law schools. (Texas and UCLA have snuck into #14.) But more importantly, the T14 have all ascended to the top 10 at one time or another. (And this is why Vandy and UCLA have a big leap ahead if they are to strive to enter the halls of T15.)

Note however, USNews does not use the term itself. It has just become common knowledge.
