ASU is a joke. Case in point: I graduated from ASU.

Re: ASU New USNWR Ranking/Affect on School
Haters gonna hate. Asu ranked highly for a number of reasons and not because it cooked the books. All of the schools use screwed employment ratings-asu is one of the few that openly discusses what the percentage actually means. Yes, there are fewer jobs- but that is true everywhere. Many firms came to fall oci, and several students found jobs through it- including those outside of the top 10%. The reason to choose asu is not a question of rank snobbery but of opportunity. Asu corners the Phoenix job market. Any student that wants externship or clinical opportunities finds that. Asu grads are becoming more competitive because they leave law school with a degree from a reputable school and a resume stacked with experience.
Say what you want- but I have a paid job with a reputable firm, excellent experience working for both a federal agency and a federal judge, and a tan in March.

Wait until the ABA begins requiring schools to report only those jobs that express in writing a "requirement" or "preference" for JD's (separating the two categories), as well as disclose those jobs that are funded by the law schools and/or colleges and universities themselves. Then you're really going to see who has been lying.RobotGardener wrote:Well the 99% number sure is not a true reflection of their employment data but they are pretty upfront about it. It took me two seconds of googling to find the real deal.
The break down is like this
167 students.
3 not seeking employment (no explanation as to why)
34 employed part time.
20 "employed" in full time off campus graduate fellowships funded by the law school.
That leaves 110 student with full time employment. That is only 65.8% of the class that is actually employed full time.
So really they are lying (but with statistics). I think this is pretty common among law schools.

It's just not true that ASU corners the Phoenix market. Most of the big firms in Phoenix have 1-2 SA's that are from ASU/UA and then the rest of their class is T14 students (+ Texas or in Snell's case, someone from Iowa or Vandy usually it seems). I definitely think top 10% at ASU makes you competitive, but the big firms still seem to prefer people that grew up in Phoenix but then went to MVPD for law school and want to come back (assuming decent grades).

If rankings don't matter, than why do they have them?

I accept and agree with most of the comments here questioning ASU's ranking. Just don't lump UW in with ASU. UW has actually been ranked #23 before, so its return to the top-25 is no surprise. Furthermore, UW is a superior university to ASU overall. The UW also dominates the entire pacific northwest. That isn't exactly the NY or L.A. market, but at least it dominates, and in more than one major city.gravityrides0 wrote:ASU is a good school. as of right now, only in Phoenix. but definitely not #26 good nationally. end of story.
