Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
There really isn't an objective answer to this question. Is it worth sticker? I guess, but it is still a risky decision at sticker (same goes for the rest of the lower T14).
In reality it comes down to your other options. Taking a T15-18 or a top regional at half price ($100,000 debt) would be a far less risky idea than a lower T14 at sticker.

I'm taking Cornell at close to sticker, so clearly I think it's worth it.
I want to know who you're referencing...sanetruth wrote:There is someone in particular who has been doing this in every possible thread recently, who shall remain unnamed, and it's annoying as hell. So...IBthatguy.aliarrow wrote:IBT0LsACCEPTEDTOMVPBSAYCORNELLISNOTWORTHSTICKER
A very easy to detect pattern among TLS 0Ls - the schools in the tier right below your own is never worth sticker.
HYS 0L -> Argues CCN NOT worth sticker
CCN -> MVPB
MVPB -> NDC
NDC -> G, UT, UCLA, USC
etc...
All part of the never ending dick slinging contest that is TLS

I agree it may be less risky taking T15-T18 with considerable scholly in the sense that there would be less debt upon graduation, but I think that snap-shot of risk is probably outweighed or at least equaled-out by the fact that Cornell gives a much better shot at getting a 160k job than UCLA/Vandy/USC. But of course there is general risk in going to law school these days, even at some of the best (which I think is part of your point).

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
What's the comparison? I ask b/c a lot of time the $$$ is vastly different going down a few ranks in the 13-18 range. If the comparison is Cornell @ sticker vs. 50% off at Vandy, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat.
I personally found Cornell to be kind of stingy w/ money for splitters, and tuition (like most schools) is laughably out of touch with reality.
Cornell will get a lot of love here, deservedly so, for it's NLJ 250 placement.

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
First of all, as somebody who grew up Catholic, the pope thing was really funny. More to the point, it really depends on your other options, how much you want to work in NYC, if you would be happy with PI and Cornell's decent LRAP as a backup. I agree that if you had 50% tuition at Vandy or Texas, that would probably be the way to go. If you could go free to someplace 20-30 or even lower tier 1 and would settle for a job outside of biglaw, that would probably be the way to go. I think it is a gamble, but about an equal gamble to any schools 7-14. You are slightly more likely than not to land a biglaw job in NYC. If you don't debt, will be a problem for a while.

definately worth sticker. Plus Ithaca is a fun college town in a beautiful section of upstate. Also, after HYS, firms don't appear overly interested in the rankings amongst t14.

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
If you want NYC Biglaw its clearly worth sticker....anybody arguing differently is self gloating because they feel that they are going to a "better" school...and "T6"....what the hell is that? No such thing exists! There is a T3--HYS--no doubt those schools stick out above the rest but after that there are the top 14/15 schools and thats it---can you really argue NYU ("T6") region is really a better school than NU if you live in Chicago and want to work in Chicago--absolutely not--NU is a much better choice for that person--and is NYU better than Berkeley for Cali law???
To the people creating a "t6" and all these other distinctions to make themselves feel better about not getting HYS--get over yourselves and realize what you are saying--soon these kids will have "t6" "t8" "t10" "t12" "t14" t"18" etc....and what if the rankings switch and Michigan moves past NYU or Berkeley ahead of Chicago (2008)--what will happen then?

This is assuming debt, correct? Would the answers be different if someone had the means to pay up front or someone else was paying their way?

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
Alright guys, what if my other option is Texas with a $76,500 scholly? I want the northeast (NYC, Philly, Boston, or even Pittsburgh or Providence). San Francisco would also be fine, though I realize that ain't happening without ties (or Berkeley or Stanford). I got $72,000 from Vandy, but ruled it out because I hated it when I visited. I also got a full ride at WUSTL and $75,000 from Fordham, but ruled those out for various reasons. It's now between Cornell and $200,000 of debt and Texas and roughly $110,000 of debt or so.

Cornell. You will have to do really well at TX to get out of the state.CornellLawOrBust wrote:Alright guys, what if my other option is Texas with a $76,500 scholly? Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
Are you asking whether or not the total cost of going to Cornell is worth it, or are you asking whether its worth it to take out the level of that cost in student loans? Those two questions are very different and worth distinguishing.
For example, I attend Cornell but don't receive any kind of aid from the school (thus paying sticker). However, I also took time off between law school and undergrad to work full time, and I managed to put away a good chunk of money. I also went to an in-state state-school for undergrad on a substantial scholarship, so now my family is able to partially support me with the money that they had saved for my college. For my particular situation, I absolutely think that Cornell is "worth sticker" because I'll be graduating with a very manageable debt load.

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
$90K is a big difference. It depends on how much you really want the NE. Personally, I probably would not have come to Cornell for sticker if I had those other options on the table (probably would have gone to Vandy). That said, I think it is mostly true what people are saying. Cornell is on par with (or slightly better than) most schools below Columbia and NYU is your goal is to get to NYC.

Re: Is Cornell worth sticker?
To big law or bust types, Cornell at sticker is going to be worth it. Otherwise it may be or it may not be.
Texas is your best bet in this case though. How much are you going to knock back a year from your loans while paying to live in NYC?
Go to Texas, finish in the top half and get market rate in an area of the country where you can pay off that 110k in three years and still live very comfortably. If money is your main concern here, go to Texas. Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston are all growing at like a 20% clip. This place is a land of opportunity, and it is big enough to accommodate people from all walks of life.
