just got into UT. may be looking at Vandy also.... can someone talk about COL in Austin, general culture of the city, and where law students live?

Does it feel too big with the school in the city? Also, I've heard UT is "really liberal." Super-conservative isn't a requirement for where I go to law school, but I'd like a variety of legal views that includes conservative ones, or at least a place that entertains the possibility of a conservative viewpoint. If that makes sense.

SATCO FTW! Did you make it to the bars on demonbreun/division near campus? Those are the vanderbilt bars and you're unlikely to feel out of place there. I wouldn't judge Nashville's nightlife based on broadway. I only go once every couple of months and even then, it's only for the novelty/something different. The bars in midtown have less of a southern vibe and are the kind of bars you'd find in any other college town.

I will say that I felt underwhelmed by Nashville. It was way more southern than I thought it would be. Vandy as a school was exquisite, but Nasvhille as a town seemed meh to me. Haven't been to Austin before so I can't compare the two

I don't know what all you saw at Rippy's, so I won't try to tell you that you are wrong to feel how you feel, but I get the sense (from these and previous posts) that you might have come to Nashville looking/expecting to be offended by something. Nashville is a great place, and my minority friends love living here (from high school and VULS). And I'm really not trying to say Nashville > Austin here--just trying to encourage you to be careful to give people and places a chance without stereotyping them. (I'm also not trying to start a fight over whether you have a chip on your shoulder or not. This accusation of racial hostility just seems to have been a theme in some of your posts since long before this weekend.)

"Underwhelmed" and "exquisite" are excellent word choices to describe the city and the school respectively.

This is fair. It comes across like I'm speaking ill of everyone in Nashville. To the contrary, I was so blown away by the friendliness of the students and staff at VULS that I had to think long and hard about rather to go there or not. And the friendliness extended beyond the school. I got into a friendly ten minute conversation with the ticket lady at the airport (who, by the way told me that she didn't like Rippy's herself.) To give Nashville fair credit, we went to San Antonio Tacos before (which rules btw) and the bar next door afterwards and everyone was extremely friendly. It's not that I'm attributing my experience at one establishment to a metropolitan area of 2.5 million. It was just that I was taken aback to find exactly what I was afraid I might - though it was in a very narrow context of a bar that was 75% tourists. I still haven't made my mind up 100% yet, but even if I do wind up going to UT, I definitely want to road trip back during my time in school.

I can't answer for the other poster, but when I went to see Transformers, I thought it was going to suck a lot. When it was pretty good, it blew me away. In contrast, I expected to bleed from the nose due to sheer awesomeness at Watchmen, and when it was just kinda average, I walked out of the theatre like I had seen someone strangle a puppy.

I had an expectation of Nashville that I don't think any city could live up to. So it's not that it isn't a great city.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the visit for the most part. (And I'm sorry that Rippy's was unpleasant.) I'm also glad you didn't take my post the wrong way--I was a little nervous about how that would sound. Good luck with the decision!

I wouldn't put too much stock in a visit to Rippy's Downtown is like a herd of cattle most of the time, and I stay away unless I have visitors from out of town.

Anyone else looking to visit, I'd stick by Demonbreun / Division if you're looking for the college scene, or maybe head down to 8th or 12 South if you're looking for a different (er, hipster) vibe. Just don't expect to hit it off much with the ladies without a full sleeve and your deep-V on..

Music scene here is great. Live music everywhere, and a better quality than you'll find in most cities in the country. As others have said, you'll get NFL Football, NHL hockey, Vandy basketball...(SEC football, you just have to wait for Florida and Alabama to visit. Not gonna compete with UT there). A Triple-A team (Brewers affiliate) or a top-ranked college baseball team if that's your thing. Lots of music fests, beer fests, etc.

I haven't been to Austin, but I think you'll be able to have plenty of fun in both places, honestly. And you get used to the accents.

I live in Austin and just visited Nashville. It's hard to judge between them because I know a lot more of Austin (22 years living here will do that for ya), but I loved Nashville! I went to see a Predators game (no major-league sports in Austin) and ate some really great food. There is a cool hipster-esque neighborhood that my little sister showed me that I loved. We had delicious hot dogs. I loved it. Weather was really nice too. It was hot, but there was a great breeze.
