This is an ok study. In it, Texas ranks 36th in the country with pretty average numbers and the highest percentage of people in the country without a high school diploma.

The biggest surprise in that article: California finishes 49th, not 50th.
Quoted for MD having highest median income 8)

I was shocked that the median income was so high for maryland because the majority of the state is bumfuck nowheresville.

Yeah, unless you drive along 495 or 270 which is one giant metro area between DC and Baltimore. I bet if you take out MoCo it would drop to about the national median - north of DC all the way to Rockville is chock full of rich people.

Ya, I lived in the Arlington area, and used to drive through maryland when I went back to my parents house. Outside of the DC Metro area and baltimore, maryland is indistinguishable from west virginia.

The budget problems actually have a lot more to do with the structural deficit caused by a gigantic property tax cut that the Republican state leadership passed in 2006 than biennial budgeting. The state Supreme Court ordered the legislature to lower the property tax rate, and they tried to replace most of the revenue with a business tax that has woefully underperformed. A good chunk of the cut was always supposed to come from GR, though, so I think the "structural deficit" term is justified. The deficit for this biennium is sitting at around $24-27 billion if we were to continue existing services, which obviously will not happen. Available GR is $15 billion below 2010-11, and the first version of the budget is brutal. We will definitely see significant cuts to education and health care. Health care cuts hit the state particularly hard in the short term, since we lose federal revenue. Of course, you also have to consider that the level of state spending is already incredibly low per capita - so you're not cutting "fat," you're chopping off a leg. The only saving grace is the rainy day fund, which is definitely something the state did right. There's about $9 billion in there, but I think it's highly unlikely that legislators will vote to spend more than half of it.

State of Texas Human Services employee here. Word around the (worried) office is that they are not going to use the rainy day fund at all. They are just going to cut our services, possibly passing a 2-day a month furlough. Oh yeah, my program gets gets federal funding, but we have to BILL medicaid to get it. Which means we have to work. We're already on a hiring and wage freeze. Last I checked Texas came in near dead last in terms of turnaround time for SNAP and TANF distribution. All those poor three year olds need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, don'tcha know?

Whatever, I'm not going to be here come August anyway  All that said, the Texas legal market is still going strong and looks like it may surpass a lot of other markets out there. The cost of living is also low, yet the biglaw firms in Houston pay the same as the biglaw firms in New York. I'd imagine this state is going to become much more attractive to law students in the coming years.

Seriously. Fuck New York and all those commies on Wall Street. And don't even get me started on those pinkos in Silicon Valley. Finance and technology are dead industries; from here on out, the real economic growth is going to be in depletable resources.
Most Wall Street firms have large branches in Texas to take advantage of the tax structure, and Dallas is turning into a major venture capital destination (with a lot of Silicon Valley money flowing into it).

Also, Austin has long had a concentration of high-tech firms. Also, that port in Houston isn't going anywhere. Also, everyone knows that Dallas is full of yankee bankers.

+1
Also, the new census showed, people are moving TO Texas and away from places like NY, MA. And anecdotally, from CA, businesses are moving out while people are moving in (not a good thing).

Also, in Texas they accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, so when the rapture comes and they get summoned up to Heaven, you can have their stuff.

That is one of my biggest concerns about living in Texas. I hear Austin is pretty liberal, though.

One of your biggest concerns is being alone after the rapture? You can still repent, you know.

Almost everybody in America has masturbated or had sex for pleasure. Those who haven't.. well - nobody's going to know they're gone.

Any good lawyer-to-be on this forum is going hell. You know, the whole lying thing. Chances are people lied to just get into law school on their personal statements (I want to become a lawyer to save raping dolphins, etc.)

Besides, I said it was a true story. I'm holding on to that.

Don't let the conservative reputation of Texas scare you off. A) Austin is like San Francisco, only with Willie Nelson and B) There are ignorant people everywhere *cough cough*

Besides, a good portion of schools in the country are going to be adopting the textbook revisions demanded by the Texas school board, so being in another state won't save your children. Hopefully you'll make enough money as a lawyer to send your kids to private school.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
