The Supreme Court is not exactly a great sample there, bud.
But there are other examples as well! Take members of successful businesses, or professors, or those who attend class reunions of prestigious universities! Everywhere you look, Harvard is better represented! Coincidence? I think not.
You're right. It's not a coincidence. It's because Harvard is over twice the size as Yale. Divide those numbers by average class size and you'll get a different conclusion.
::facepalm::
I tried sooooo hard to avoid this response by including "those who attend class reunions."

Holy mother Mary! Last time I attempt sarcasm on TLS. Ever. (probably not though)
For the literal record, I was agreeing with Rad Law & hinting to AreJay711 why his example was far from the "proof" he claimed it to be.

Is the number of students attending class reunions not a measure of an institution's prestige and prowess?

Did your parents have any children that lived?

UT is one of the best value law schools around. The monetary cost of the school given the reach and opportunities is very hard to beat.

Aside from that, the list is blatantly stupid and misleading. It appears to be based on tuition alone without factoring in opportunities after.

Yeah, UT is a good value. I don't think it's GREAT value. A great value would be something like, say, The University of Houston. That, to me, is great value.

Also, how is the article misleading? It is very straight-forward in pointing out what it is trying to accomplish and that is to identify the best schools offering a quality education at an affordable price. I really don't see how it's even kind of misleading. I'm not saying that I'll be sending off my applications to Texas Tech or The University of North Dakota tomorrow, but I do think the list seems legitimate based on what it says it's trying to do.

Nice Stand By Me reference, by the way.

UT is a much better value than UofH.

Value doesn't simply equate to cost. The article is misleading because it makes cost the focal point. However, value is a sum total of all the parts.

The schools on that list are pretty awful in terms of employment prospects and opportunity. You may be paying less in tuition, but the opportunity cost is significantly higher.

It also fails to take in to account scholarships, which schools give out a lot of.

Much better? Ha, that might be a bit of a stretch, don't you think? Much better value would be like comparing UT to South Texas College of Law. Either way, I still think U of H is the best valued law school in the state. Are you from Texas? Just curious.

I am, and no, its not a stretch. UT is as close to national as a non-T14 can be.

And tuition at UT is $3K more than UofH.

That makes UofH look like Roger Williams by comparison.

UofH is about 3rd in Texas.

Man, I love your exaggerations. They're quite funny...Roger Williams. That was good. Also, who do you think is 2nd in Texas? I hope you aren't referring to SMU or, gulp, Baylor for value. If you are, please exit the forum immediately.

SMU will take you a but farther in Texas than UofH. Really the two are tied, but with slight edge to SMU.

As far as exaggerations, not really. UT is an excellent school, head and shoulders above UofH. For $3K more. So I'm pretty sure it's you who ought to be exiting the thread or revising some opinions. Since, you know, you said UofH was the best value in Texas.

Fixed.

And, I thought we were talking about value? If we are, then U of H and SMU shouldn't even be in the same breath. If you honestly give an edge to SMU in that category, then you are a R-E-T-A-R-D.

I can understand someone saying that UT is the best school in the state in terms of value, even though I don't agree. But to say SMU is better than U of H is just ridiculous.

Also, tuition costs look like this from the 09-10 cycle:

UT - $27,177 (IS); $42,814 (OS)
UofH - $21,029 (IS); $28,439 (OS)

+1. TT09 seems woefully ignorant of the job opportunities at many of these schools, and how these opportunities (or lack thereof) compare to those at more legitimate schools (i.e. UT).

And dunno how UofH earns marks as a top value. It's a decently-priced school that has moderate placement in a single, average-sized market. By all means, it is the definition of mediocrity. (But hey, it has a great health law program!) UT, on the other hand, is top dog in Texas and has at least some level of national placement. The opportunities it opens up are not even in the same ballpark as those from UofH. End of discussion.

Who the heck is TT09?

UHouston is, by no means, a greater value than The University of Texas. Period. There is no argument there, and you're filling this thread with nonsense for trying to make one.

U of H is a top value. I don't understand how someone doesn't realize that. We're not talking about national placement here. We're talking about bang for your buck. U of H offers this thanks to their very low tuition and good job prospects in and around the state, most notably in Houston (definition of mediocrity just epitomizes you as someone who screams, "I THINK I'M BETTER THAN EVERYBODYYYY!!!! Might want to lose that attitude before you hit the real world, big guy. Just sayin').

An SMU or UT student would know that.

...so I take it Houston is your top choice then? Have you researched your options? There's a lot of good advice on this site (forums and articles) that you might find useful. Retaking the LSAT may also be a wise decision, unless you're dead-set on working in Houston and can attend UofH with a sizable scholarship. HTH.
