just curious - how many employers came to Davis fall 2009 OCI? Hastings had 153, or about 1 employer for every 2.6 students.

Damn, what's your monthly BART bill? You must have plenty of time to do reading though...BART is actually very comfortable for that.General Tso wrote:This is only true if you live in SF and not in the East Bay. I have 3 roommates and pay $425/mo in Scrublin.

Yeah I like it....I pay about $250/mo for BART. It's much more comfortable than driving, that's for sure. I figure it would cost me at least 2x that amount between gas, bridge, and parking to drive.sundance95 wrote:Damn, what's your monthly BART bill? UCD places nearly 2x as many grads in Sacramento as in SF...my primary reason for choosing Hastings instead.
OP if you want to bank on at 33-50% chance of being stuck in the Central Valley, then by all means choose Davis. But I recommend you visit first
2. CA govt. work tends to be in Sac for rather obvious reasons
Every big firm in SF does OCI at both schools. You're not going to get "stuck" anywhere unless you have horrible grades or do no legwork whatsoever to find yourself a job. Generally UCD is about 1/3 each in Sac, SF and LA.

I agree on self-selection but disagree on gov't work. Last I checked Hastings placed about 17-18% in government whereas Davis placed around 10%. There are a lot of state and federal jobs in the bay area.SoftBoiledLife wrote: 1. Self-selection

I am curious of the UCD's employment prospect in 2009, too. I ma wondering whether they can keep the rank and biglaw employment rate.General Tso wrote:just curious - how many employers came to Davis fall 2009 OCI? Hastings had 153, or about 1 employer for every 2.6 students.

If you're sick of city life, then Davis is undoubtedly the way to go. Make sure you apply for CA residency for your 2 and 3L years.[/quote]

Though the debate can go on and on, I think I am pretty sure I am going to Davis. Tenderloin scares me. Never been to that kind of places. Hope someone get my sopt in Hastings and look forward to see u guys in Davis in Augest.SoftBoiledLife wrote:1. If firm opportunities are the same, obviously Davis is the right choice for me.SoftBoiledLife wrote:General Tso wrote:SoftBoiledLife wrote:

OP-based on your previous few posts, it seems like you are too concerned about the rankings. Outside of the T20, all of the T1 schools start to blend together in terms of quality/prestige. Hastings seems like a nice enough school, but I didn't even apply. I like SF well enough, but my wife literally said "I will go wherever you want, but not SF or LA." Since she is covering my COL, it wasn't a battle worth fighting. See you at Davis.....

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realize that my decision is mostly based on ranking and the laid back atmosphere of Davis,yo! wrote:OP-based on your previous few posts, it seems like you are too concerned about the rankings. after reading a few posts in the forum, I found out Hastings has strong connections in Asian countries, which is where I would like to practice,I am starting to wonder whether I have made the right decison or not, since Hastings still has a very good reputation in CA, and I plan to practice in SF or LA in internatinal business law firms, so...

Yeah, the fact is, if not for the drop in ranking of a stupid magazine, I will go to Hastings in a heartbeat...SoftBoiledLife wrote:Bad idea.Ranran1116 wrote:Yeah, I start to realise my decision is mostly based on ranking and the laid back atmosphere of Davis, now I am wondering I have made the rihgt decison or not, since Hastings still has a very good reputation in CA, and I plan to practice in SF or LA in internatinal business law firms, so...yo! wrote:OP-based on your previous few posts, it seems like you are too concerned about the rankings. Re: Hastings v. Davis
The rankings flop around from year to year so much that the difference between 20 and 50 is virtually meaningless. When I was applying to law school, Davis was 44. I'm now a 2L and it's at 28. But it's the same law school, with the same job prospects. Nothing has changed. I like it here, and I'm thrilled to see us as a top-30 or whatever, but it's not really any better or worse than Hastings. Pick for better reasons than US News.Ranran1116 wrote:Yeah, the fact is, if not for the drop in ranking of a stupid magazine, I will go to Hastings in a heartbeat...SoftBoiledLife wrote:Bad idea.Ranran1116 wrote:Yeah, I start to realise my decision is mostly based on ranking and the laid back atmosphere of Davis, now I am wondering I have made the rihgt decison or not, since Hastings still has a very good reputation in CA, and I plan to practice in SF or LA in internatinal business law firms, so...yo! wrote:OP-based on your previous few posts, it seems like you are too concerned about the rankings. How is Davis doing in placing students in Asian market or firms doing international business? Or maybe the location and alumni may limit the opportunities in finding a job that i want?

I don't know of anyone doing this, though I'm sure if working in Asia was your focus you could pull it off. I've gotten some emails about jobs in China, but I don't think it's terribly common.Ranran1116 wrote:How is Davis doing in placing students in Asian market or firms doing international business? Yes. Right when you step outside. They will look at you and say, "This person is obviously a Hastings student.....GET THEM!!!"Ranran1116 wrote:btw, is Tenderloin really that dangerous? will I get mugged?
Kidding aside, it is not a safe area of town, is widely known as such, and if that is a big concern of yours you would be wise to take that into consideration.

this year I saw one Hastings student spit upon by a bum, and read police reports of one student's car parked on the street broken into, one girl's iphone stolen, and one girl pushed by a bum.primusux wrote:Yes. it's bad but not that bad...I'd only be worried if you are walking near campus after 8 pm (and even then you can get a Hastings police escort, or a free ride if you live nearby). just use common sense and guard your belongings.

In my experience, SF bums are much more likely to be crazy/hostile/weird, and much less likely to be violent.General Tso wrote:this year I saw one Hastings student spit upon by a bum, and read police reports of one student's car parked on the street broken into, one girl's iphone stolen, and one girl pushed by a bum.primusux wrote:Yes. San Francisco doesn't do what a lot of cities do and bus their homeless elsewhere. (Ever wonder why San Diego is so pristine and downtown LA is such a dump?)bk187 wrote:Is this really that much different from any other major US city?General Tso wrote:this year I saw one Hastings student spit upon by a bum, and read police reports of one student's car parked on the street broken into, one girl's iphone stolen, and one girl pushed by a bum.

This would be a hassle. If you're going to live somewhere else, at least pick somewhere with a BART station.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
