Go to Texas man. PLEASE. Don't spend your 20's and 30's in financial ruin.

Re: Harvard Sticker v. Texas Full-Ride
If it weren't for the $100,000 preexisting debt, I'd say Harvard. But you are out of your mind if you are willing to be a total of $370K in debt. Absolutely pick Texas. The end goal, at least for the first few years, is going to be the same. You will get a solid job at a big firm in Texas. Sure, Harvard of course has residual, down-the-road benefits, but if you plan on staying in the South, Texas has tons of residual benefits also.
My question would be, what marginal benefit to you expect to get from Harvard that you don't think you will get from Texas? And then ask yourself if you are willing to pay $270K for that marginal, additional benefit. Getting biglaw in Texas out of school? THats not a marginal benefit since you can do it out of Texas. The alumni network? The lay prestige? Clerkship chances? Ok, maybe, but I'm not sure those marginal benefits are worth it in your case.

The OPs situation is way more complicated than recent posters are giving it credit for. Big law is somewhat tough to get out of UT and 160K+ debt without big law would suck. Harvard at least pretty much assures big law, but with a crazy amount of debt.

With HLS, you could make the next 3 years of your life the best 3 years of the next 15 years of your life knowing you have both biglaw secured and a life destroyed by debt secured.
Boston seems like a legit place to get down.
Austin is better but you'd be that dude in the library 24/7

Congrats on your decision. Probably one of the hardest ones you'll ever have to make. You will DOMINATE texas and be a huge star -- and you can hang out with BigZuck!

But yeah, we can hit up the bars!
Oh, wait...
j/k AJ, I see why you did what you did and either way was defensible. Good luck with the gunning and see you in August!

I will say this for relative posterity -- or until this forum gets washed away into the depths -- I really appreciated y'all's advice and took it seriously. You helped make it okay to not take H. When I thought I had decided on Harvard, I was wistful. I felt unsettled and I had to keep justifying it to myself. When I decided on Texas, I knew I was taking a risk (a fairly unecessary one because I knew I could wait a year) -- but I was betting on myself. And I feel really empowered by that. When I signed my Letter of Intent, I felt like I was free to make something of myself. Either diploma would've had my name in big, bold letters; it's up to me, not the school's brand, to do big, bold things.
I might report back in 2-3 years and let y'all know how it turned out. Anyway, I'm rarin to go. Hook 'Em!
See you soon BigZuck! We'll have to hit up the 18+ bars until November, haha.

Re: Harvard Sticker v. Texas Full-Ride
Only you know how risk averse you are, debt averse, etc., so I'm sure any decision you make that sits well with you is a good one. I personally don't subscribe to the whole "I bet on myself!" mentality because it reminds me of the "Of course I am above average" mindset that everyone has (statistically impossible). Of course, not everyone subscribes to my life philosophies haha. There are advantages and disadvantages to both paths; I hope it works out for you. It probably will. Best of luck!ajclark1992 wrote:haha thanks. Decided to take the bet on myself.jbagelboy wrote:droppin bombs, bro.ajclark1992 wrote:I'm not going to Harvard.

I think you made the right choice, and I wouldn't look back in the slightest. Just go kill it down there, and you will be totally set. You will have a manageable debt load, can go through school without much pressure, can spend lots of time networking with TX attorneys and forming connections since you will be closeby, and will have great career prospects down there if you do well.ajclark1992 wrote:I'm not going to Harvard.
This was a win win for you, so don't look back.

One part good decision. Part two defer to Texas or reapply next year, work for Testmasters for a year or two and pay down that debt. Seriously.ajclark1992 wrote:haha thanks. Decided to take the bet on myself.jbagelboy wrote:droppin bombs, bro.ajclark1992 wrote:I'm not going to Harvard.
