How do people seriously turn down Harvard Law??? Forum

Not quite sure yet, actually. I’m really, really torn. I’ve already submitted my deposit to Stanford, but Harvard is becoming more and more appealing for a few reasons. On the one hand, Harvard is appealing because I’m not exactly sure what type of law I’d like to practice (I’d probably going to do Biglaw, but my instincts are definitely public-interest oriented) and I think the size/breadth of classes/student groups/clinics/etc. of Harvard may help me decide what type of law I’d like to get into. I like Cambridge and wouldn’t mind moving back to the East Coast for a few years and most the attorneys that I’ve talked to at big firms in SF and LA have said either that they have no preference between H and S, or that they would (marginally) prefer an H grad to an S grad (nobody in the admittedly limited sample I spoke to said they would prefer an S grad over an H grad). I also *might* want to do something outside of law for a few years (business, finance, etc.) and I think the HLS name will carry me further in that regard.

On the other hand, Stanford was always my number 1 choice. I 100% sure I want to practice in CA (and 99% sure in SF) after graduation and the connections that I would make at Stanford would probably help in that regard. I also liked the culture at S a lot more than H (went to both ASW’s)…the people seemed more laid back, more public-interest oriented, less cutthroat, etc.

So yeah, I’m kinda confused right now. I’m thinking about sending a deposit to HLS before their May 1st deadline just to give myself a little more time to debate the issue. I’ll def let you know what I end up doing though.

As you both no doubt gathered from the Stanford ASW, virtually everyone there was choosing between HLS and SLS. Clearly there is no "wrong" choice, but I'd counsel you both to do what feels right. Don't overthink it. If you think you'll regret not going to one school or the other, that's a powerful feeling that I, for one, would not ignore. Clearly your decision can't be made on a whim, but with only 10 days left or whatever, you do have to make up your minds. You've probably both done your research, talked to people, etc. If, in your gut, you want to go to Stanford, go to Stanford. If you have the same feeling about Harvard, go to Harvard.

I don't pretend to know either one of you, but to me it sounds like sfdreaming wants Stanford and ConMan wants Harvard. Clearly my opinion means nothing, but that's just the sense I get from interacting with you both. Either way, you can't really go wrong. Make sure you both keep me posted.

You want to check the policies of those schools. At some places I think it's fine. Some (NYU, for instance) require you to withdraw from all other schools that have accepted you.

Ok, first off.. OP is obviously a troll and a ridiculous one at that. You can't see how anyone would turn down Harvard? You're an idiot.

Secondly, obviously I'd take Y over all, but I am 95% sure I would choose Stanford over Harvard if i got into both. Stanford is smaller, less pretentious, and much more beautiful than Harvard while offering very similar job prospects/opportunities
