As for New York versus Chicago:

New York has more of the stuff common people don't care about: art, culture, etc.
Chicago has less of the stuff that common people dislike: intellectuals, artists, foreigners, etc, and more of the stuff they do: sausage, deep dish pizza, etc.

bolded is very credited. And for the record, people in Chicago don't give two shits about new york. Personally, I'm from neither city, but love both. People from NYC seem to have this mean streak about them trying to yell about how much better their city is than everywhere (even converted west coasters), and they all fail to realize that nobody cares but them. I think if anything, the lack of that prevailing arrogant attitude makes chicago>nyc in my book.

As a native New Yorker, I would also hate the lack of efficient/meaningful public transportation.

It's no NYC, but LA transit gets a bad rap. I spent a couple of months there without a car and did just fine. If you live on the gold or red lines the subway is quick and surprisingly comprehensive. If you're not on the metro the bus works much better than expected. I only ran into trouble when I was out drinking late.

But Chicago has better COL, it's less crowded, a lake you can swim in, Better Architecture, parks that arent filled with joggin moms pushing strollers, bums, and lawyers pretending to be lance armstrong(ironic because i'm a cyclist who wants to be a lawyer)

both Chicago and New York have great food, hard to say which i like better. But NYC pizza over chicago any day. Deep dish is amazing, but not even a monthly thing. Hotdogs are better in chicago though, so are bugers(Kuma's Corner for the win)

Anyway, i moved to California for a reason. Bay Area is great, LA is ok. San diego = snooze fest.

Also, Chicago like newyork, has a bar on every street and corner. I think the city used to have the highes per captita in America.

TITCR, as someone born and raised in Chicago, no one cares about NYC, at least not negitvely. Most of Chicago's younger population is transient anyway, or from rural Midwest, so the don't have any chips on thier shoulders.

Also, wtf is this about "common people"? And disliking "foreigners"? WTF? I guess by "common people" you mean "middle-class white Republicans"... NYC has awesome things to do for people of just about any background or income level. Also, NYC has the most awesome food in the world. There are restaurants offering every kind of food in the world, there's 16 different kinds of Asian food, Polish, German, and Bulgarian restaurants... hell, NYC is the only place I've ever encountered Ethiopian food, and it's awesome.

NYC is also the only place I've ever seen a macaroni-and-cheese restaurant. They have everything there.

I'm within walking distance of an ethopian, polish, tons of different types of Asian, and German and I'm in the far northside of chicago. I don't know about Bulgarian.

The only notable variations are: better Mexican in SoCal, better Chinese in SF and New York and better sushi in coastal cities.

NYC definitely has the highest proportion of high end restaurants though. LA is second. Chicago is probably a distant third.

I am basing many of my generalizations about Chicago off three friends who live there who won't shut up about how awesome Chicago is and how it is so much better than New York. Never mind that two of them have never been to New York. All they can talk about is having a lake and beaches (I don't consider sand next to a lake a beach. It's only a beach if the water nearby has salt in it) and deep dish pizza. It infuriates me.

by socal, i pretty much mean the LA suburbs with 23423423 chinese people (e.g. rowland heights, hacienda heights, san gabriel, etc.)

I'll settle this:

SF, NYC, and Chicago are perhaps the three greatest cities in America. Different strokes for different folks.

Personally, having also lived in NY for 4+ years, I think SF is better...for me, that is. I never entirely got used to being in NYC. It's just not my speed. Chicago is a solid #2, but it's just so damn cold.

I'd even argue that it might be moreso than Chicago, especially because of the influence of all of the Napa/Sonoma vineyards and NorCal foodies as well as the huge sustainable/local food culture.

True, all the hippies (I use this term affectionately here ... in the organic, sustainable, Whole Foods kind of way) in the Bay Area contribute to a high concentration of very good food.
