path of least resistance leads to NEW YARK CITY90convoy wrote:This may sound weird, but why don't people just not work in NYC when taking on sticker debt. Sticker debt + NYC biglaw doesn't afford much of a decent lifestyle.
I mean, market paying places are generally NY, Chicago, DC, LA, SF, and Texas
Chicago is smaller and more insular
DC is hard to get (and has a high cost of living)
SF has a high cost of living
LA is harder to get and still isn't cheap
Texas is super insular

I don't think it's as easy as "Just do market paying with low COL bro"90convoy wrote:This may sound weird, but why don't people just not work in NYC when taking on sticker debt. Sticker debt + NYC biglaw doesn't afford much of a decent lifestyle.

Sticker debt + 125k as a fourth year in Minneapolis doesn't do much for a decent lifestyle either.

yea it's v competitive. which makes sense bc i could literally buy a fucking mansion there and can't afford a 2br condo here. most of the firms pay 160 for patent too (but compressed scale later I assume)utahraptor wrote:from what I hear, Atlanta seems like the king of all bloodbath marketsfats provolone wrote:i struck out in atlanta and i lived there for 10+ yrs

I wonder what it'll take to become the kingpin of the Iowa legal market.

I don't know much as a 0L, but I think it's all about sacrifice. If you're willing to give up a lot of the common luxuries knowing you'll be able to procure them again five or so years down the line, then living with debt won't be all that bad. Keep a 3 suit rotation so that you don't spend too much on clothes/laundry, and then ditch whenever the firm is having socials or some kind of pricey dinner arrangements.BigZuck wrote:I don't think it's as easy as "Just do market paying with low COL bro"90convoy wrote:This may sound weird, but why don't people just not work in NYC when taking on sticker debt. Is there any good law school within a two hours drive of Las Vegas? I'll seriously consider working my SAT job another year so I can almost completely get rid of my UG debt if there is one.
I mean Iowa is great and all and I can't wait to gun, but I think eventually I'm going to want to live in or near Vegas.

I always thought UNLV was a terrible TTT though.
I know UCLA is only a three and a half hour drive away and I did get WL'ed a few years ago; perhaps an ED next cycle could put me over the top there. Who cares about sticker? The closer I am to Vegas, the easier it'll be to expeditiously break even on grad school debt.

Why be 83rd best when you can be 27th best?sublime wrote:DaRascal wrote:Is there any good law school within a two hours drive of Las Vegas? I'll seriously consider working my SAT job another year so I can almost completely get rid of my UG debt if there is one.

Why would you bother with Vegas when you would have the Commerce Casino right there?DaRascal wrote:I always thought UNLV was a terrible TTT though.

Re: T14 Sticker vs. T30 Full Tuition Scholly
That's a really good point. I can save up the money from working this next year, only make the minimum payments on my loans, defer them, and then... Boom!! $10-15k of play money to spend at the Commerce Casino. This could work out well. I just wonder how difficult it would be to balance law school and pro poker. Someone mentioned "Rounders" before. I haven't seen that movie, but, if the plot is similar, I'll check it out so I have at least have a little bit of guidance here.BigZuck wrote:Why would you bother with Vegas when you would have the Commerce Casino right there?DaRascal wrote:I always thought UNLV was a terrible TTT though.

Yeah but I need to go to a good law school as a fallback option so that if I happen to get really unlucky I can still have a decent job as a lawyer.

Vegas, because I love action (hockey, horses, Greek soccer, prop betting etc), and I'll be primed to play in all the meaningful poker tourneys if I'm there. I guess the only option I really have is to take the full ride I've been given, gun, work very hard to at least get a $50k+ job out of law school, save up every penny for a few years, and then spend my work vacations in Vegas.
It's just so disheartening to know that I might not be able to get in the game until I'm 32 or 33!

The prodigal gambler with a criminal record and the modest T30 in a pristine, quaint Midwestern town. Will this work?
