Funny, but unfair to people who may be swayed to attend another school based on your advice. FWIW, Paralegals can get salaries in the $60k-$80k range with some serious experience, but most paras don't get salary at that range. Some paras get into $70k/year total, but not salary -- it's the intense and insane amount of overtime that puts them there.RJ127 wrote: I have worked at three law firms in the past three years in Los Angeles and Orange County, CA and the file clerks are the only employees that make 35-40k. Paralegals are being brought in at almost $70k, Law Clerks make anywhere from $65-85k, and first year associates at my firm are brought in on the low end at $95k, upwards of $115k.

If people base their choice on one guy who makes outrageous comments about a school, then...I don't know. No, but I still pay a shitload. Fortunate enough to not have to pay for rent but I pay everything else. "Everything else" includes driving, parking, etc. which can cost more than rent in 99% of the places in the US but certainly not in Manhattan. I have a small scholarship and minimal loans. I'm a hustler when it comes to money (i.e. clean someone's yard for $100 bucks; buy/sell for profit on ebay; online poker; 3 labor jobs in summer) and I worked my whole life saving a good amount of money. I will be in about 50k debt upon graduation.Stringer6 wrote:now the real question:

I think opera soprano has the right idea though. There are ways to pay it off now with IBR etc. I mean be careful but a lot of the people telling you not to do it got their loans before the govn't took it over. I feel a lot safer owing the govn't money back (i.e. they will work with you) rather than 1st BumblefuckBank in Idaho.
If you want it, do it. A TON of people have full loans out. Although a lot of people have help from parents.

Re: Is Fordham Worth Sticker?
It's true about IBR being a godsend. I would not have felt comfortable getting this far in debt for any school if I had private loans, because I hope to make a modest salary doing something I actually like, and I would be SOL if I had to pay back $1,500+ a month. The terms of this program are amazingly generous, and while I wish government would subsidize us at the front end, I really can't complain.Columbia Law wrote:No, but I still pay a shitload. If you want it, do it. A TON of people have full loans out. Although a lot of people have help from parents.
Also, I do have an off the record official estimate that 20% or so of Fordham people have their parents pay for everything. The rest have varying degrees of loans, and nearly all my close friends are paying full sticker or close to it.
Also, to address the jobs/class rank issue, sometimes you can do everything "right" and it won't work out. I had my bid list custom vetted by someone who truly knows the legal field, and my grades reasonably reflect the effort I put into 1L year and the amount it meant to me. I wasn't top 10%, but I defied my family's expectations and it made me happy to do so. I have no regrets about striking out, and like most of my classmates, I'm still really happy to be here and happier to be done with finals. A lot of my friends have firm jobs lined up and I'm thrilled for them.
To Columbia Law specifically-- I have known for a while, and I am glad you came clean.

Re: Is Fordham Worth Sticker?
I have never seen definitive information confirming that top 1/3 or even top 20% at Fordham can get big firms anymore. All of these stats seem to be guesses and the information put out by the school does not help. Suffice to say it seems like many more end up without biglaw than with it based on the fordham people checking into this thread.
I want to also add that my personal opinion is that the number of fordham students getting biglaw is probably on the lower end, like 10%-15%. This is based on the number of people who I am aware of striking out during OCI. Like someone said above, there are definitely people in the top 1/3 who are not getting big law. Add enough of them up and the number of people at Fordham who can possibly be in biglaw gets quite small.

Sure, why not? When the legal market was booming it was never more than 15%.
