They'll figure it out, and it doesn't matter?

Non-traditional how? If you are talking work experience, then your resume contains it. If it is some other factor, the personal statement or a diversity statement (or both).

I wouldn't say it doesn't matter. I got into Michigan, slightly above my numbers, and was given $30K because of my prior "leadership" in the military.

That's awesome, congrats / thanks! (Is it tacky to just indiscriminately thank members of the armed forces for their services?)

It's not though sometimes it can be uncomfortable when it's a complete stranger because you don't know what to say in return. :)

All of these, but particularly your personal statement. That's your chance -- you have a blank page on which to prove to them that you're "non-traditional."

Pick your theme, describe it well (and concisely), then get a few recommenders who will back up the image you're presenting of yourself.
