I think a more proper analogy here would be...

A 1987 Kia or a new BMW.

The new Kias just don't break down :|

Sorry if this was discussed already. I am considering:

Asus K42JC-A1 vs. Sony Vaio EB Series with about the same specs (i5, 500 gb HD, 4 gb RAM, HDMI).

The Asus has a smaller screen and is more compact, but less sleek looking. The price range is in the $800's for both.

Does anyone have experience with either or can recommend one over the other?

Should I just shell out the extra $400-500 for the Lenovo T410?

You can get a 4 GB i3 Lenovo T410i for $800. Where is the $400-500 coming from? warranty or the i5?

Alas, the Thinkpad doesn't have an HDMI (I think the Edge may).

Don't buy a Sony. If you do, God kills kittens.

I played around on the website and a comparably equipped machine is in the $1,200's. I am pretty sure it was the T410, not T410i.

The Edge does have HDMI. Used it the other day to watch something from Hulu on my TV that my DVR forgot to record.

Yeah, the larger HDD and processor would put it over. I'm planning on having a desktop, so HDD size doesn't matter much- keep all my media on a PC.

You're talking about the slim thinkpad?

Well, that's totally different - but makes little sense if you're trying to be frugal about the laptop thing.

If not, it makes little sense either way.

Asus is good. They already make a lot of the desktop components out there.

Im looking for i5core with more than 2Ghz, 1g graphics card, small SSD, a company with a great 3 year customer service/warrenty, at least 4g RAM, 15'' screen at least 720p, windows 7, office /w student. But overall a reliable computer that wont run slow and die on me (but if it does, great service.)

Where should I be looking?

Coming into this thread very late...

Can anyone tell me if it's worthwhile to get a Mac for school? If so, which one? I'm more concerned with having the best laptop for school than I am about price (though price will definitely factor into my decision)...

Weight is definitely a factor as well... I'll be commuting 40 min each way via NY public transit.

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

After a trip to the local Best Buy, I've decided that 15 inches is overkill, so I am settling for 13 or 14.

Any insight on Toshiba PSU9BU?

I found the keyboard on 13" models (of any maker) to be slightly too small for comfort.

Good point. Not sacrificing anything for the exams. So it looks like it will be this guy for me (as of right now).

For what it's worth, the 12 inch Thinkpad X201 has the same size keyboard as the Thinkpad 410.

The Mac vs. PC debate is a never ending one. I'm going with a mac for a # of different personal reasons. If I were to get a PC, I'd definitely go with Lenovo. It really is a personal choice at a certain point.

Until people figure out that a mac is a PC.
