i am in with a full ride, and the idea of attending school and not paying any tuition is appealing. however, i feel like the cost of living in the area, after everything (book, rent, food, misc.) could amount to between 20-25k per year. is this accurate? more or less? any info would be appreciated.

Yea, living in the area will cost you more than $25k/year, and if you are hoping to live in the city be prepared to pick up a side job. I currently work/live in the city and make over 75k and still have to hustle, can't wait to add $100k of extra expenses.

Hey you gotta spend it to make it right?

it will not cost you more than 25k, 20-25k is accurate. you could live in greenwich village for 20-25k a year and thats one of, if not the, most expensive part of the city.

you can spend more than 25k a year if you get everything you want and live in an apartment that fits all your needs, but im assuming you'll be looking to go as cheap as possible.

This is very very inaccurate.

I currently live in a tiny 1br (barely 400sq ft) on the 6th floor of a 6th floor walk up in Greenich. No washer/dryer, no converted rooftop, 1 small closet, and in rent alone pay just under $24k a year, which is good for greenich/west village/soho, trust me. Unless you plan to live in a converted half room, or 200sq ft. studio I promise you that you won't be living in those neighborhoods comfortably for less than $25k/year. You still have to account for food ($6 for a box of ceral, welcome to The City 8) ), public transit, laundry/dry cleaning, random purchases (drugstore, clothes, gym membership, etc...), oh and you may want to actually GO OUT, which I could allocate $25k/year to alone in the city!

Make sure you do more research than what you hear on TLS, but from someone living it...trust me $25k ain't what it used to be!

When doing your research, also keep in mind that St. John's is in Queens, which has much lower rent than living in Manhattan. There are plenty of nice neighborhoods near the school, which are not only less expensive than Manhattan, they are more convenient too.

why live in greenwich village to attend st. john's? there are plenty of areas in queens closer to the school where you could pay 800 in rent, give or take a few hundred, and be 15-20 minutes from manhattan.

No decisions from St. Johns posted on LSN since 2/22? What's up with them?

looking at last year's LSN cycle is appears that they pick up with sending out decisions again right at the beginning of march so i suppose we can hope to see some movement this week.

I lived in an awesome apartment in queens, relatively near st. johns, for $800/month. (Me and my roommate shared a 1000+ square foot 2 bedroom in queens)

It is totally do-able...but I would not recommend living in Manhattan if you are at St. Johns. Live in one of the great parts of queens (Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Jackson Heights, or even Astoria) where you can live reasonably and be right on the express subway train...you are in midtown in 25 minutes...

I lived there and did this (not to St. Johns, but I commuted out to long island) for 2 years and it was perfect. The best of both worlds...an awesome apartment in a great neighborhood...but I could easily hang out in Manhattan whenever I wanted to.

Any news? SJU seems to be moving at a snail's pace excluding scholarship recipients.

i've been waiting since mid-november and have called a few times. each time they claim that my application is in committee and should be decided upon in a matter of days but that has yet to be the case. i really do hope that they provide decisions before the mid-april seat deposit deadlines because i know that i am in no position to be throwing away $500 at multiple schools.

in with a full scholarship.

my #1 with a bullet. just attended the admitted students day this past weekend. really enjoyed it. liked the campus, liked the building, liked the area of queens it's in.

now just need to wait to hear from fordham and dozo and maybe cornell by april 15th.

i feel like going to law school for free provides a flexibility after law school that cant be beaten. but we shall see.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
