Re: UVA 2010, RD
I understood what you meant (but I'm biased) but I think you explained it well. Anyway, I know from my perspective, that I appreciate the schools looking at my 4.0 (highest available at my school), and also appreciate schools congratulating me for it. I worked very hard in two majors to earn it. so thanks for defending the goodness of itwired wrote:I recognize there are far fewer 180s than 4.0s. My statement doesn't make a lot of sense, but let me give some caveats.
First off, I should say perfect As are what I thought were more difficult than 180s. The 4.3 adjustment throws things off.
Second, I am excluding degree factories where a pulse is a sufficient condition for a 4.0.
Third, when I say "difficulty," I am referring primarily to the amount of work required to achieve it. I think the consistent effort needed to achieve a 4.0 is harder to put in, then the amount required to score near a 180. In connection with that, I think that most of the 180s have certain degree of luck to them that a 4.0 GPA doesn't have. There are some gifted individuals who can score a 180 more than 75% of the time, but I think they are a very small percentage of the people who actually score a 180. The vast majority (in my opinion) are people who typically score between a 175-180 and have the right test on the right day. Contrast that with a 4.0 which doesn't have the same type of luck.
Do my caveats make my statement any less incredible? If not, I probably ought to reconsider my position, but it seems to make sense to me right now.

Good call. I will say I think it is more difficult to a get a 4.0 at a Top 100 university than it is to get a 180.
Thanks for the polite response.

Yeah as someone with a near-4.0 from a top 5 university and with a mediocre (by TLS standards) LSAT, I can pretty safely say this isn't true. Every year a handful of kids from every school graduate with 4.0s. Every year, the number of 180s does not exceed, I don't know, 50 or so in the entire country. The numbers just don't add up.kittenmittons wrote:+1GargamelITT wrote:sorry, i really really don't think this is true
