Lets talk about gaining residency in Florida for tuition purposes. Initially I heard it was difficult, but the TLS article states Florida is one of the easier states to gain residency in.

FLORIDA: Obtaining residency in Florida by 2L is a relatively straightforward process for those who know what needs to be done and set out deliberately to do so right from the start. Living in Florida for 12 straight months without extended time out of the state and getting a Florida driver's license as early as possible should be enough to get the job done.

This is not as easy as it sounds. If your parent or legal guardian is a resident and you are a dependent, and they have maintained residency for a year, you may qualify for residency. Otherwise, we have this information from Dean Jerry himself:

There are some additional requirements for a student to be classified as an in-state resident for tuition purposes. The key point is that simply living in or attending school in Florida does not, in and of itself, establish legal residence for tuition purposes.

Instead, residence in Florida must be a bona fide domicile, which is more than merely maintaining residence while attending the university. This determination is based on a variety of factors which are evaluated by the University of Florida Office of the Registrar after a student submits information to that office.

Factors that weigh in your favor are the following: having a driver’s license and a Florida license plate and registration for twelve months, owning property in Florida for a year, demonstrated commitment to community service, filing and paying taxes in Florida, and a clear desire to staying in Florida after completing the law degree. Gaining residency has been reported as difficult, though since four out of every five students are already Florida residents, there is little anecdotal evidence to go on.

Would moving back out of state for the summer count as an extended time out of the state? I am guessing the answer is yes. Just wondering if anyone else has some information on this, because gaining resident status for tuition purposes would save almost $40,000 over two years.

Grrr, I should have gotten my package/letter in Saturday's mail. I am from Florida and I have a friend who sends me letters from UF. It normally gets to me in about three days. Hopefully, a fat package will be stuffed inside my mailbox today!

I live in Tampa, FL...not that far from Gainsville so I was really hoping to get the DIT 3/11 letter Saturday or today. I predict Wednesday at the latest. But I'll post when I get it. I'm 80% sure it's a waitlist though.

Reviewed by Committee / Decision Pending since 2/11 here as well. 165/3.23

Other applicants from our time frame have gotten their decision letter, while others have been stuck at RC/DP since as early as 11/30. It seems that after the auto-admits, there is no preference for early applications. We are all in the same "held" pool.

I was surprised that some got the DIT dated 3/11.

UF was on spring break last week. Even if thier admissions department was "making decision" I doubt that the University Courrier service would be putting those decisions in the mail.

Unfortunately, I expect that they were sent off today.

So I looked through all the posts from around this time last year and those who had DLIT on March 18, 2009 were a mixed batch with acceptances and waitlists.....so we still have hope!

The admissions office over there at FSU is about 300% more efficient than UF.

In UF's defense, they've thrown contact after contact at me including an alumni, a current student, a member of their board of trustees and a professor all offering to answer questions/chat over the phone with me about the school in general.
