Yes, i got the same e-mail. I'm not sure whether this means the deferral would be binding. Anyone have a definite answer on this? Also, not sure what would happen with scholarships (I assume you would be re-evaluated for scholarship money in the fall).eddieg803 wrote:Did anyone else get this e-mail?Dear Admitted Law Applicant,
We are pleased to announce that a greater number of students than we expected have paid their seat deposits and have selected the University of Miami School of Law as their choice for fall enrollment.
In light of this, we are able to permit a limited number of students to defer entry until fall 2010 without the need to reapply. Should you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, contact us prior to your deposit due date by e-mail at admissions@law.miami.edu, or by telephone at 305-284-2795. You may also fax your request to 305-284-3084. Requests for deferral will be considered in the order received. You will be advised by e-mail and telephone whether or not your request is granted.
If your plans have changed and you no longer intend to study at the School of Law, we would greatly appreciate your notifying us immediately.
Sincerely,
Michael L. Goodnight
Assistant Dean of Admissions

So is this not good news for those of us waitlisted?

I don't know if it is bad. I know a few kids who have put down deposits at UM, and are still waiting to hear from a few school.

It doesn't sound good--especially since their waitlist repply card stated that "only if more people withdraw than anticiapted..."--so unless it is the case that a bunch of people placed a deposit hoping to get off another waitlist or hoping to get into a better school--it looks like us waitlisters are out...SpencerPratt wrote:So is this not good news for those of us waitlisted?

I was just admitted off the waitlist two weeks' ago (no scholarship), and got the deferral email too. I don't think I can handle a 100% debt load for Miami, so will be withdrawing.

fyi, miami jumped up to 71 on the rankings Ken put up this morning as the Official 2010 US News Rankings. It would appear that the downward trend has finally been corrected. Could this have anything to do with the newly hired Dean and accompanying faculty?

I would imagine it had a lot to do with that.rambo de leon wrote:fyi, miami jumped up to 71 on the rankings Ken put up this morning as the Official 2010 US News Rankings. heck ya. i know in the chat session UM said they wanted to be ranked in the 60's by 2012 so that looks pretty plausible now

Re: In at Miami!
It would make total sense that the rankings were affected by the new dean and faculty appointments, but do you think this info was factored in to the 2010 rankings. All of this news only came out with in the last month. My hope is that this did NOT factor in to the 2010 rankings, and that 2011 will see an even greater jump after accounting for the dean and faculty.rambo de leon wrote:fyi, miami jumped up to 71 on the rankings Ken put up this morning as the Official 2010 US News Rankings. I would think that if the school initiates the deferral, it is NOT binding...for ethical and logical reasons. They are asking you to commit to them, while they did not commit to you and asked you to defer. if they didn't offer the deferrals, they'd either be forced to over-enroll by a gazillion, or risk getting sued for breach of contract. Thus, not only do they have to offer you a seat or deferment at YOU CHOICE, they have to give you the freedom to apply to other schools at your choosing.

I noticed applications are still accepted until the end of July. Should us waitlisted not expect to hear anything until July/August?

I don't mean to be a pessimist, but I think we will be lucky to hear anything at all by then, yet alone anything positive...ever...--if they are this over enrolled that they have to offer deferment (sp?)---

Just withdrew from UM. Not sure how much that helps due to the aforementioned "over-acceptance" that is going on. Good luck to everyone waiting it out, I hope someone here is able to take my spot!

Looking over the new rankings....it looks like one of the reasons for the 11 pt. improvement was the 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio (versus the 19.1:1 last year).

I applied to 6 schools, ranging from top 50 to TTT. I was waitlisted at all of them (Miami being one of these schools). These over-acceptance emails from asst. Dean Goodnight requesting deferrals make me think it is unlikely that I will be getting off the waitlist. I want to think I will be getting admitted somewhere but as of now the situation is not looking as good as I would like. Hence, effed.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
