0L Ladies - Female C/O 2019 Applicants

Welcome!

After the Duke Debacle of '15, I thought it might be nice to have a friendly space for female-identifying applicants to talk about things like class gender ratios, breaking into the (big)law boys' club, etc. Or, you know, succulents or Leslie Knope gifs or whatever. Lurkers are welcome, nay, encouraged! :D

Just some fellow 0Ls in the Duke thread suggesting that the gender imbalance in certain law schools/the legal profession in general is due to inherent differences between men and women and therefore shouldn't necessarily be remedied.

It was actually very civil and we're all still friends with the boys!

They're probably lucky I don't usually read the school specific applicant threads.

I recently read a fascinating article about white privilege - I really wish I remembered the details for it. Basically, it was about how people are much more willing to accept the premise that other groups are discriminated against, than the fact that they actually benefit from it. What happened in the Duke thread sort of reminded me of it, though substituting male privilege for white privilege.

It really resonated with me because, despite how liberal and gung-ho about racial justice I am, I still experience that same sense of... injury, almost... when I think about things like URM-boosts. I definitely agree 100% with affirmative action on principle, but there's a sort of visceral reaction that takes place when I realize that someone with lower stats than me might be accepted somewhere I won't be. For an instant, I feel like I've been wronged because I'm not being given the same "advantage" (then quickly have to remind myself how many lifelong advantages I enjoy).

ETA: I found the article. Actually it's not really that similar to the situation at hand, but still a great read.

I believe they can be summed up as follows:

One of us ladies: Don't like that X school has such a low percentage of ladies

All the boys: WHAT IT'S NOT THE SCHOOL'S FAULT THIS IS JUST AN OUTLIER YEAR ANYWAYS GUYS SCORE HIGHER ANYWAYS SO IT'S NOT THE SCHOOL'S FAULT AND GIRLS BIOLOGICALLY ARE LESS INCLINED TO BE LAWYERS SO HOW CAN THE SCHOOL FORCE 50/50 GENDER NUMBERS???

ETA: scooped by barley
It was UVA, not Duke. HTH. Sincerely, Debacle Antagonist

Well, I was absolutely just reading that in the Duke thread, so if you didn't think it was there, the UVA thread must have been REALLY bad for you actually to notice it. Or the Duke and UVA applicants share disturbing similarities.

Ah, I suppose it carried over to the Duke Thread, although its origins lie in the UVA thread.
