Yeah I think Sublime hit it on the head. Many of the "top tier" type applicants use WASHU as a safety school. Also WASHU has a reputation as probably the most generous with scholarship money of any school in the T25 so it is often used for scholarship negotiation purposes. Anyways who cares? There are lots of things to consider when choosing a school, some more important than others. I don't see how yield percentage is even a consideration.sublime wrote:matthewfsq wrote:>900 offer but <200 matri... striking proportion... so many admits choose not to attend WUSTL?
1) WUSTL doesn't really YP.
2) It is in kind of in a weird place, where it is outside the T14 and to some extent trying to poach applicants from lower T14, a good number I imagine end up going to the T14 (or even Vandy, UT, or UCLA).
Those are my guesses at least.
Although matriculation rate is not something I would really worry about when trying to pick a school.

I'm sure they lose a lot to the lower t14, but I think they probably lose most to regional T1. WUSTL is ranked higher than most regional T1s, and it's a tempting option over say, ASU, Moritz, BU, UWisc, anything in that range. It's a nice fancy t14 alternative fantasy, but one that doesn't end up making sense for a lot of people trying to stay local.LET'S GET IT wrote:Yeah I think Sublime hit it on the head. I think that it's also worth noting that 20% yield is not really uncommon for schools in Wash U's peer group. GW and Emory both have lower yields, according to LSN.
Also, yield rate is a pretty awful indicator of anything, apparently. According to this ATL article, North Carolina Central has a 48.2% yield, which is higher than Stanford.
I'd say yield is pretty much just an indicator of your acceptance pool.
When re-reading this before I post it, I notice that I come off as a huge Wash U shill. I'll own it. I'm a shill, what of it?

ATTENTION: OJALA & OTHER WEBSTER APPLICANTS
We discussed earlier that none of us had received confirmations. I emailed the office for confirmation this morning and received a reply that they did not have my essay. I just forwarded the original message and everything is okay now. But, take the time to email the office if you haven't.
Best,
Yoss
