Born and raised in Phoenix. I went to ASU for UG but worked full time so most of my classes were held at night. I can answer general questions about the school but would be more apt to answer questions on Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe and what there is to do in the area.

Re: ASU c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
A few blocks from campus there is Mill Avenue which has probably 30+ bars and restaurants of all types. Most of these bars are pretty casual and do not fall into the club category (not my thing either). It does get pretty packed Thursday - Saturday with mostly UGs but it's a fun night out every once in a while. Depending on where you live, you can take the light rail there which is nice as cabs are pretty ridiculous. If you do decide you want the club scene or higher scale bars, Old Town Scottsdale is the place to be. Several of these bars are clubs but there are a couple decent casual bars (American Junky). Drinks are going to be more expensive in this area and you'll likely being driving so always be prepared to have a DD. DUI laws in AZ are pretty harsh so this is quite important. Oh and my favorite bar in all of Phoenix is Postino. It's a casual wine bar and is quite fantastic. There are two locations and they have some pretty sweet drink happy hour deals ($5 pitchers and glasses of wine before 5pm). It's a bit hipster but has good music and a great vibe.nickb285 wrote:So...what is there to do in the area?
I'm not much of a clubbing type guy, but I do like to go out and have some drinks at a cheap bar and the like. Also, what sorts of hiking/biking/camping etc is around? I know it gets ridiculously hot in the summer, does that keep people inside for the most part?
Hiking is quite popular in the area and the best mountain is Camelback and is only 10-15 minutes from campus. There are two sides with varying difficulty and can be quite challenging. Surprisingly, this is still popular during the summer months (although not as much so) just most people shoot for early morning and late afternoon hikes. On that note, it is quite hot and the dry heat comments you may hear should be ignored to an extent. When it's 115, it's hot. There is absolutely no way of arguing it. Most people avoid being outside for extended periods during the hottest parts of the year (June - August) unless there is a pool involved (I'd say >50% of houses have pools, just check google maps satellite view). With that being said, however, in late October - early April can be quite beautiful with temps ranging from 65-90. Living in Chicago now, I can tell you there is a vast difference in 90s when humidity is involved.
Biking (assuming you mean moutain biking and the like), in my experience, is not very popular. I personally don't know of anyone that does it, however, there certainly are people that do. I won't add too much here since I am utterly unfamiliar with it.
Camping is also popular, just doesn't happen in the immediate area. If you are looking for camping you are likely to head north towards Prescott/Flagstaff/Sedona area (all within 1.5 - 2.5 hours driving). Sedona is particularly aesthetically appealing and the temperature shows a pretty significant drop as you get up into this region. Most people go to camp grounds but you can pretty easily find your own trail and build your own secluded camp ground. The flagstaff area also holds Arizona's most popular ski resort if that's something you are interested in.
I hope I sufficiently answered your question. If you need more info, please ask.

Some people can manage the 115 (myself included) when it means extremely cheap golf. Summer rates are crazy low ($100 courses for $20 twilight).

1L at ASU. Happy to answer any questions you guys may have (that I know the answer to lol). Also, feel free to PM me if you'd like.
Some general things:
Dean S. is a madman when it comes to networking locally. I haven't been through OCI or anything like that so my knowledge there is limited. The atmosphere is great. Everybody gets along, nothing super competitive. I dunno.. if there's anything you'd like to know, as I mentioned, feel free to ask.

Anecdotally, would you say that ASU and U of A are about even in the Phoenix market, or does ASU dominate?

About the same. Being at ASU will give you a bit of an edge though, simply because you're already in Phx to network in your free time, lots of local firms visit the school, and it's easier to get involved. And anyways, Tucson sucksnickb285 wrote:Anecdotally, would you say that ASU and U of A are about even in the Phoenix market, or does ASU dominate?
LOL not that I'm aware of.nickb285 wrote:Also, is Professor Chodorow teaching a full course in Zombie Law yet?

Checking in. No movement on my app yet, but I was disappointed that their solicited fee waiver process was so obtuse. I had to submit my app first, then "email a short paragraph addressing what factors you would like to be considered for a fee waiver." None of the other schools to which I applied gave me any fuss at all.

Finally got a status checker login. According to the checker my status was last updated 11/2/12. I guess it just takes them two weeks to send out passwords.

+1. Lawquacious, I think your statement deserves some qualification.buddytyler wrote:Can you elaborate on this?Lawquacious wrote:PSA: Don't go to ASU law.
I'll agree that if BigLaw is your goal, ASU isn't the best choice... but I'll be graduating from ASU with basically 0 debt. I can't imagine (or care) if you can find some way to hate on that.
