Vanderbilt c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 Cycle)

Click here for a full checklist, including detailed explanations, for the application.

The majority of the Class of 2015 (62%) graduated college at least one year before entering VLS; 34% graduated at least two years before entering. Collectively, the members of the Class of 2015 bring a wealth of experience in a variety of areas. Their backgrounds include business, science, education, technology, service, public policy, and graduate training in a number of fields.

Interviews

Vanderbilt's Website wrote:Vanderbilt encourages all J.D. applicants to schedule an admission interview as part of the application process. More than 700 VLS alumni in 37 states and 12 foreign locations conduct admission interviews, and VLS admissions officers interview applicants on university campuses and in major cities from coast to coast. Visit Virtual VLS for more information and to schedule an interview (December 1 deadline).

Based on prior experiences by TLS'ers, Vandy's interview seems to be more laid back than NU's, with most people getting asked why law, why Vanderbilt, and then discussions goes to extracurriculars and personality fit. Vandy has a very small class size, and interviewers are instructed to see how well applicants would fit in with the culture of Vanderbilt.

Also, based on previews applicants' threads, even off-campus interviewers get a copy of your application before the interview. I'll be interviewing soon and will definitely update you with my experiences.

I wish they were more friendly towards splitters! But you never know, maybe I'll get a boost for my Tennessee ties...

Any of you guys doing an interview?

With Cornell and GTown lowering medians they may be apt to take splitters to push for that 170 median, you never know!

Curious and lazy: That chart shows a pretty substantial jump in their medians over the past ten years (164/3.6 in 2002 to 169/3.7 in 2012.) Was this common across the board among the best schools, or is this unique to Vandy?

In 2006 schools stopped averaging and so much prep is available (Read: TLS June/October Study Groups didn't exist in 2000) but Vandy has been on a constant upswing in rankings/medians/reputation. I know here in FL it is regarded as basically a T14 level.

I had a really awkward alum interview in 2010. I wonder if they still have it on file.

Also, there aren't that many super splitter data points on LSN, so I wouldn't worry too much, Sunny.

Yeah, their Florida reputation is one of the big reasons why this is one of the schools outside the T14 I really, really want. And their employment statistics make Georgetown look like the TTT it is.

I have mine on the 29th here in DC. I went for the phone interview initially and Christine convinced me that it would be in my best interests to do a face to face, so I'm doing that now.

Yeah not to mention - COL in DC vs. Nashville

How the hell does Vandy maintain those medians without being a T14?? Are people choosing Vandy over lower T14 for some reason? I'd assume those who get in could have gone to NDCG.. or am I missing something?

I have a lot of family in Central Tennessee. Hopefully my COL will be close to 0

I'm going to do an on campus interview in November. Doing TLS reading on it now, will update the OP shortly. Also, I'd like to add that I really hope they start requiring w/e like NU. I find that respectable.

Combination of location (most choosing Vandy probably wouldn't want N or C), money, and splitter friendliness (at least way more friendly than D).

SPECULATION.

Small Class Size - I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas medians really rise if they keep cutting class size like they did this year.

Small class size definitely helps, especially compared to Georgetown.

FWIW, I don't think Texas necessarily wanted it's class that small this year. There were two reports of REJECTED applicants being called and offered admission in early August.

Highly suggest the interview! I had one with someone from their admissions team this week, and it was highly beneficial I'd say. I got to learn a ton about the school, they were able to learn a ton about me, and it was nice to add a little bit of a human element to this whole process.

Also, I think it will be big when it comes down to scholly $$$ if they end up liking you. The person I talked to kept alluding to the amount they give out.

Seriously? Maybe I'm just completely out of touch.... I don't get this whole southern appeal.

I should just vacay somewhere in the south. Get a feel for it.

People are very polite, although not when it comes to toilet seat sprinkling, unfortunately.

Anyway, added the little info I have on interviews so far. There aren't very many threads dedicated to more than "Hurr durr, shul I intervue if its not req'redd?" There's some good info in last year's applicants thread, though.

Maybe we should start one for this year and aggregate our experiences?

Just got an email saying I go complete, even though I haven't had my interview yet? I indicated that I requested the interview on my app, does this still sound right?

I haven't been contacted by anyone yet and don't really want them to start reviewing my app without the interview

I'd say call them in the morning, but of course that email was sent Friday night.

Has your profile changed at all in the Virtual VLS? I haven't sent in my app yet, but I remember there being a section in there that lets you know your status. Not sure if it's a full-fledged status tracker, but worth a try.
