I did, but I'm not a recent admit (admitted in December). I received an ASW invite and travel "scholarship" offer from UT about two weeks ago.timeandspace11 wrote:Anyone got the ASW invite yet?

That depends who you ask! My boyfriend lived there for several years and we avoided one end of that street (I think east?) like the plague, though there were some cool bars on the west side. I guess it depends what scene you like. Definitely check out a movie and grab a meal at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (believe me - I know it might seem weird to go see a movie if you're in town for just a weekend but it was our favorite thing in Austin!). If it's nice out, check out Barton Springs or Deep Eddy (natural swimming areas). Even if it's not nice enough to swim, it's worth going to see Barton Springs! Eat tacos (preferably breakfast) at Torchy's.timeandspace11 wrote:Any must see places you would recommend? I know 6th Street has a great reputation.

But if you do stop there for lunch, I recommend ordering "The Independent." It's my fave.

Ehh....Torchy's is a little bit over-rated. It's not a must-eat, but it is good. Papalote, Tacodeli, any random stand on the side of the road...if you aren't from the Southwest these will all be the best tacos you've ever had.JXander wrote:YES.risa wrote:Eat tacos (preferably breakfast) at Torchy's.timeandspace11 wrote:Any must see places you would recommend? 6th street can be fun but a lot of the bars are very similar, and it depends on what side you are on; the western part is a bit high-end, the eastern part before you reach I-35 is the part where they close down the street to cars at night (few of these bars are actually "good;" I'd recommend the Jackalope, Shakespeare's, and Easy Tiger), and then east of I-35 are some cool places as well, but it's a bit more of a newly-gentrified, YMMV kind of scene. Rainey Street has some nice bars, South Congress can be fun, and of course the campus area is relevant to visit.
ALSO: Austin is quite possibly the best culinary city in the nation, so take advantage of it. Restaurants like Contigo, Wink, Trio, Mushashino, Perla's, Lambert's and Uchi/Uchiko are nationally recognized, unique, and definitely worth the cost.

Taco Joint is walking distance from the law school between Posse East and Crown and Anchor and they have some of the best tacos I've had in Austin. Real hole in the wall place that doesn't look like much, but delicious.

Also, the road the LS is on (Dean Keeton) terminates right in front of both Verts Kepab and Madam Mam's (as well as the new East Side King) so you will not want for good cheap food here.

Damn sounds like Austin has got some great food. I was looking online and saw there are some great drink specials as well. If I didnt have work and class I would try to go even earlier and catch a few days of SXSW.
