Hey, this may seem a very ignorant question to all of you but could someone please quickly inform me what you are all talking about with "JS1", "JS2", "KB1", ect.? When I looked at the HLS website, I don't remember seeing any mention of interviews or whatever other pre-admission activity seems to have caused such a stir here today. I applied to Harvard about a month ago regular decision.. does of any of this impact me?

Thanks and apologies for lowering the general je ne sais quoi of this bizarre thread

Harvard conducts interviews via Skype before offering admission. There is a blog post about it on HLS' website, but you won't find any mention of the JS1/KB2 lingo there -- those are pet TLS terms for the email inviting a candidate for a Skype interview (JS1 or KB1) and the phone call offering admission that follows later for the lucky winners (JS2 or KB2). JS stands for Jessica Soban, KB for Karen Buttenbaum.

All admits will be interviewed, but not all interviewees will be admitted. HLS is planning to do 1200 interviews this cycle and will likely offer admission to 850 in order to seat a class of 560.

Ahh, thank you very much for the clarification. So people are waiting to be contacted about interviews at HLS. I suppose I won't be getting one; not particularly butthurt about it since I only got a 172.

I think some people have made special arrangements to get emails instead of calls, such as if they're living in another country. Could be wrong.
No, you're right. Although it's not so much that the applicants request it; they just automatically decide to e-mail applicants when they see they're overseas.

Yeah, sorry. Yoda and I were training:

Lavitz: I saw--I saw the Harvard applicants thread.
Yoda: Friends you have there.
Lavitz: They were in pain.
Yoda: It is the future you see.
Lavitz: The future?...Will they get JS1s?
Yoda: Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.
Lavitz: I've got to login.

Anyway...

Still think the JS2s will come in large batches on the few days without JS1s. That is--unless they actually have no intention of filling those vacant JS1 slots next week. I don't think it's likely, but I guess anything's possible: maybe they never wanted to do 5 straight days filled with non-stop interviews, so they just listed 5 days to give people more options, then only invited enough people to fill half the slots.

As it turns out, with the exception of Friday, it generally looks like the mornings are filled and the free slots are in the afternoons. That wouldn't look good to send out JS1s and have the whole first week limited to afternoon options. So in this scenario, they would wait to send out JS1s and use some of the downtime in the afternoons to do some JS2s. The next JS1s then may not come until Monday at the earliest, so that they'd have at least Monday afternoon to get some non-interview work done.

Again, this is just one possible explanation for the lack of movement today. It's also possible that they'll send out the JS1s tomorrow. I mean, I recall JS doing limited JS2s over the weekend last cycle, so--again--anything's possible.

I just saw the employment numbers of HYS and now I'm really scared. About %10 of HYS students have a hard time acquiring a full-time and JD-required job. Half of them don't go big law. I'm attending a top 10 school (not HYS), and now I'm feeling a greater pressure to succeed!

Most of the half not going to biglaw likely CHOOSE not to go to biglaw.

have my js1 this week--definitely psyched that have gotten this far, but at the same time, kind of freaking. i will admit i am really an odd person, kind of awk. scratch that, REALLY awk. i think interviews usually don't benefit me. at best, people are like, "well, she's got other stuff going for her, maybe we'll give her a chance despite that awk-ass interview" lol.

so...we'll see how this goes. please wish me luck (or give me advice, i am sure i will need it)! rooting hard for everybody and happy to chat about my interview after it happens if you want to pm me.

I can't speak to KB, but JS is an absolute dream to interview with. Seriously, I'd have lunch with her and just chat. She's that easy to talk to.

+1. It was relaxed and (at least in my case) so brief that I wish there had been more time. Just be yourself -- some of the finest lawyers in the American tradition have been "awkward" ... Darrow, anyone?

this is very good to hear, thank you both and good luck! random fact for other socially challenged people, i learned that calvin coolidge is also among our ranks--he was called "silent cal" in college and there was a mocking poem about him in the yearbook. weird small government conservatives yay! while i don't share your political beliefs i am cool with you as a group, i'm sure you guys are excited to hear.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
