I spoke with Dean Z at an admissions panel last month, and she said there's no reason to write the Why Michigan essay in particular if it's not going to be great. All the optional essays hold equal weight. That being said, an optional essay is definitely recommended.

Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
TLS: Is it okay to write a “Why Michigan?” essay on some non-academic factor? For example, for students who aren’t sure where they want to focus and cannot recite the scholarship of certain faculty members, would it be silly to write the essay based on geographic, anecdotal, or “gut feeling” factors? Similarly, can you tell when a student has taken to the website and — excuse my language — “bullshitted” about a subject they hoped would sound impressive?
Zearfoss: It’s absolutely fine to talk about a non-academic factor. I think that’s really helpful for us to know. And yes, I do like to think we can really tell when someone is just miming our language from the website. And it’s just not worth it write one if it’s pro forma (as we say in the law). You shouldn’t do it. It is helpful to write an optional essay just because sometimes people blow it on the personal statement and that extra essay really gives me an important piece of information.

Congrats! Are you ED or RD? I was thinking next week we would start to see changes, so this is good news!
I also though they waited a few days until it ticked over so you could get the mail first. Did you try accessing the AS site yesterday or earlier? Maybe you will have something in your snail mail today too....

Yes, I think it should say complete by now. I would just call or email and ask what you are missing.chem wrote:Mine is showing incomplete, has been since late september, early october. Think I should call?

I got in!
Tip: go to the admitted student website and try to log in. My status checker still just says complete, but I was able to log into the admitted student website and see that they sent out my packet today.
RD, went complete early October, 3.4/177

Yay congrats to the others who are were admitted! And hang in there to the ones that haven't yet been. I understand how much waiting sucks.
In answer to some questions, my app went complete on October 5th. My status checker went to "decision" this morning. Hadn't tried to access the admitted students site until this morning. I was ED.
Were the others who have been admitted ED too? or is it mixed?

Ok, too much good news for me to respond to all at once.
sanetruth and other EDers- AWESOME! Cycle over - huge congrats. Enjoy returning to normal life and planning you transition. Major envy over here.
kaleidoscopeyes- I knew UVa was just being screwy. You can stop worrying about their mystery now. Huge thumbs up for that! And Congrats!
And yes, you are all def in if you can get in to the AS site. No way would they let rejects in there lol.
Sigh, I want to check, but I decided after not checking for a week to check it this morning. I don't want to be crazy checking it all day.
