What is the longest some of you have waited to hear back?

Post by risktaker » Mon Mar 07, 2011 10:31 pm

As of now, I have a sneaky suspicion that my cycle is going to extend well into May or June. I wanted to know how long some of you have waited for a school to accept you off their waitlist? If so, did you pay deposits at other schools while waiting?

Are deposits due at the school yet? You're not going to hear about a waitlist until then.

I'm pretty sure I heard of someone getting off the waitlist less than a week before class starts. I wonder if it could actually go beyond that point.

I haven't been waitlisted anywhere yet just on hold or accepted; however, my top choices are holds. I applied in October. If I haven't heard by the deadline for my fallback seat deposit date, I'm definitely paying. I need somewhere to go. haha.

In a blog post at one point — can't find it now, was on either Yale's or Stanford's admissions blog — a dean mentioned calling people in August. Evidently the point was that you get less time to decide whether you want the space if you get called in August than if you get called in May. You might get a week to think it over in May. You might get a day, at most, in August.

So yeah, if you want to deal with the waitlist, you might not know until people are getting ready to apply for the following cycle.

Pretty sure I am either going to get a WL or ding at USD. Trying to figure out what I would do if I got a WL at USD. I have heard from many people that USD has given decisions in May before that have been waitlists. That is going to definitely suck if something like that happens to me. USD is definitely my top choice, but I don't know if I can just ride out the waitlist till the end of the summer. Don't want to end up in a really shitty living situation.

Ya, I wonder about this situation too. I've seen several instances on LSN in which Villanova throws acceptances at WL'ed people toward the end of July. WTF am I suppose to do with that lol? At that point, any self-respecting 1L would probably have a lease signed, assuming he/she's moving to a new city.

The only solution I can think of seems extremely desperate, in most circumstances: plan on attending your next best choice in the same city.

People get WL offers a couple days into orientation. I think its definitely worth waiting till the absolute last minute if it means going to a significantly better school. Yeah the first week or two of school will have alot of added stress while you make living arrangements, and you'll be a nervous wreck all through summer, but thats a small sacrifice if it can offer long term career benefits.

Based on what I've heard from people I know,

1) my college roommate got a call from Columbia friday before the orientation week - he ws about to attend NYU orientation, so he pulled out and went to Columbia.

2) my brother got a call from UVa during his orientation week at Georgetown - he stayed at Georgetown.

These are the most extreme I've heard. Chicago doesn't start until late September, so I'd imagine people will get a call in September - they even ask you on the waitlist form (I was WLed at Chicago last year) whether you are attending law school (if not) so that they can approach you in September.

Would a marked improvement on the June LSAT be factored into WL decisions for this upcoming year?
