Re: UCLA? 2011
I had a voicemail from Dean Schwartz on my work line last night (maybe I should have stuck around later). I just called back and I'm in, with some $. Yay! I'm impressed by the turnaround time - submitted 12/18, received 12/30, complete 1/3.

I have competitive numbers for UCLA, at 75th LSAT, close to median on GPA, haven't heard yet. Complete 11/30. Bad sign? People with relatively similar stats have been getting $ recently.

Same here. The wait is painful, especially since they have no status checker for you to track changes with.awilson11 wrote:I have competitive numbers for UCLA, at 75th LSAT, close to median on GPA, haven't heard yet. Re: UCLA? 2011
Do you think the status checkers help much? I mean, if they updated them MEANINGFULLY, I guess? But look at, say, USC's status checker. You basically sit under review... for months. Same with Berkeley. You flip to Decision Rendered/Finalized sometimes *after* you get the e-mail or worse, snail mail.Spinach Lover wrote:Same here. Personally, for anything past the nuts and bolts of making sure my app is sound and all the pieces are there in good health, the status checker is useless.
For example, with Penn, we all read WAY too much into every little change... and it ends up meaning nothing. Same happened for Boston College. People were wildly speculating about "anything under mailings?" and "oh man, I think that 12/21 date group is screwed!" and none of it panned out.
Useless.

The lack of status checker has made it way easier for me. I compulsively check the UPenn checker like 5 times a day.Spinach Lover wrote:Same here. The only status checker that made it better for me was the UIUC one.

Re: UCLA? 2011
I think the lack of status checker is WAY better. UCLA is one of my top choices, but with them I feel that I will find out when I find out. On the other hand, I wake up in the morning and feel I NEED to check my status checkers.

For anyone who has received a scholarship: does UCLA stick any stipulations onto it? The more I look at this, the more appealing it is. If I can get in-state tuition for 2L, my scholarship should cover all of tuition.

I'm a 1L, you need a 2.5, and the total tuition bill will be 145k-155k if you are out of state the first year (a little less if you have outside health insurance)SisyphusHappy wrote:For anyone who has received a scholarship: does UCLA stick any stipulations onto it? In state Tuition is going to be ~45k next year and ~50k the following year, and may jump as much for your 3L, just to keep you in the know. Add 10k to the sticker price if you don't have state residency.

That almost makes any of the UC not worth attending.weee wrote: In state Tuition is going to be ~45k next year and ~50k the following year, and may jump as much for your 3L, just to keep you in the know. Add 10k to the sticker price if you don't have state residency.

because of the budget cuts? I know that UC undergrad tuition is going up by 8% but are tuition increases for law school for certain?

I need to know for certain before I decide to attend. If in-state tuition is going to be higher than Ivy League standards, they are going to have a tough time attracting good candidates without a lot of aid offers. Sure they can always find people who would pay the sticker gladly, but that would probably damage the numerical qualities and their US News ranking. Unless they will use part of the increased tuition to offer more aid to subsidize the cost of the recruits they want.rs2004 wrote:r6_philly wrote:That almost makes any of the UC not worth attending.weee wrote: In state Tuition is going to be ~45k next year and ~50k the following year, and may jump as much for your 3L, just to keep you in the know. FWIW I think CA higher education is much better than at least here. We pay $90+ per credit for community college credits and that's if our school district contribute to the CC. They are whining about raising it from $26 to $36 in CA. Our in-state tuition for UG is $8000 or so even if you have $0 income. They should bump up the UG tuition slightly.

well you'll know what the UC law schools' tuitions for 2011-12 will be when they post it up in a few months, if they haven't already. If their tuition for the coming year is reasonable then that's fine but then again there's 2L and 3L.

Re: UCLA? 2011
They should really have a tuition program like some UG that locks in the rate. So after all the merit aid I can just take out a contract for the entirety of the 3 years but have the funds disbursed when needed. This way they can not screw with the recruits right now, and free to raise tuition for next year.rs2004 wrote: well you'll know what the UC law schools' tuitions for 2011-12 will be when they post it up in a few months, if they haven't already. I still think the COA is going to be similar for the law schools. Law schools are not in the red, they are well endowed and can always use the below median money to subsidize the above median recruits. Raise the tuition, make it seem more valuable, get more revenue from sticker students, and offer more aid to the top recruits. Everyone wins except for ones paying the sticker - well no, because they will benefit from the prestige and rise in the rankings.
