Mentioning 0L Preparation in a LOCI. Yay or Nay?

Post by Raskolnikoff » Sun Apr 11, 2010 4:03 pm

Would you recommend mentioning that you are currently doing (or about to start) law school preparation? Anything from "for Dummies"-type books (PLS, LS Confidential), to the more in-depth stuff (LEEWS, GTM), to the substantive material (E&E, hornbooks).

Is it a good selling point or a big turnoff?

EDIT: let's make it a poll.

I'd say nay.

Concentrate on the school, why you are a good fit for the school, why the school is a good fit for you, and perhaps add any new information about what you have been up to since your application went in.

It's a chance to show them you are really interested in their school, not that you are gunning to do well in law school. :D

Right. I didn't mean centering the letter around this subject, but writing everything you mentioned and merely throwing it in as a one or two-liner.

At least some of those materials you mentioned are quite cynical and adcoms would not be excited by your use of them. Yet other of the materials you mentioned are those which are recommended against by many professors. It is hard to see how this sort of thing could help.

Definitely won't help, possibly will hurt. So, nay.

No way. Smacks of presumption. You want to supplicate, not overstate, yourself.

exactly. Soonergirl said it best. If im a member of the admissions committee and I read a LOCI that says "Furthermore, I have begun a Law Preview course and I have read LS Conf, Getting to Maybe and the Examples and Ex. Series", I would think to myself "what a little prick. He doing all this stuff assuming hes gonna get in". Thats just me though. I have a sick sense of humor. Ha.

In all seriousness, dont add that stuff. Its unnecessary. Just say that you have kept yourself mentally engaged and if given an opportunity to attend the school youre ready to go.

Good luck!
